Vatican Rome Italy

By Updated 10 min read

Vatican Rome Italy refers to Vatican City, a sovereign city-state that sits as an enclave inside the city of Rome, Italy. It is under half a square kilometer in size, so its main sights are close together, but the museums, the basilica and the Necropolis each have their own entry rules.

Vatican Rome Italy is how many travelers search for Vatican City, the tiny sovereign state that sits inside the Italian capital. The three names belong together: the Vatican is a country in its own right, it is surrounded by the city of Rome, and Rome is in Italy. This guide explains how that works, what the state is, where its sights are and what you need to know before you go.

We are an independent visitor guide, not the official ticket office. When we state a fact, we link the source so you can confirm it. If you only want to plan your entry, start with where to buy Vatican tickets? and come back for the background.

Where Is Vatican Rome Italy on the Map?

The Vatican is an enclave within the city of Rome, Italy, according to Wikipedia. In plain terms, it is a separate state completely surrounded by the Italian capital, west of the River Tiber. You do not need to leave Rome to reach it,.

“Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.”
Wikipedia · Wikipedia: Vatican City

Wikidata places the state at about 41.904 degrees north and 12.453 degrees east. Its main visitor addresses use the postal code 00120 and the name Città del Vaticano. The Google Maps listing for St. Peter’s Basilica gives Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano, and the Vatican Museums listing gives the same postal code.

By metro, take Line A to the station Ottaviano, San Pietro, Musei Vaticani. One tour operator in our data says the Ottaviano stop is only a 10-minute walk to its office, and that St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point. For a longer look at the geography, see our page on where the Vatican is.

Is the Vatican a Separate Country From Italy?

Yes. Wikipedia calls Vatican City a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe, ruled by the pope. It is governed by the Holy See, which Wikipedia describes as a sovereign entity under international law. The Holy See maintains diplomatic relations with 180 states and is an observer state of the United Nations.

The modern state dates from 1929. The Roman question was settled in 1929 with the Lateran Treaty, which established the modern sovereign state of Vatican City, and the name Vatican City was first used in that treaty, signed on 11 February 1929. Wikidata gives the same inception date.

The background goes back further. Wikipedia explains that Italian unification concluded with the capture of Rome by the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, after which the pope declared himself a “prisoner in the Vatican”. The 1929 treaty ended that standoff.

What Does the Name Vatican Mean?

The word comes from the Etruscan settlement Vatica or Vaticum, according to Wikipedia. The Romans called the surrounding area Ager Vaticanus, which means Vatican territory. The state is named after Vatican Hill, the geographic location of the state within Rome.

Wikipedia adds that the name was already in use in the time of the Roman Republic for a marshy area on the west bank of the Tiber, and that the Romans considered the area dismal. Later the name came to mean a much smaller area, the Vatican Hill, today’s St. Peter’s Square, and possibly today’s Via della Conciliazione.

The official names are worth knowing for signs and maps. The Italian name is Città del Vaticano, or more formally Stato della Città del Vaticano, meaning State of Vatican City. The Latin name, Status Civitatis Vaticanae, is used in official documents.

How Did the Vatican Become What It Is Today?

Catholic theology holds that Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus considered the first pope, was crucified on Vatican Hill in Rome during the 1st century AD. That tradition is why the area became a center of the church. Wikipedia then traces the Holy See’s temporal power over the Papal States, formed in 756 with a donation of Frankish territory.

The pope returned to Rome at the end of the Avignon Papacy in 1377. After 1870 and the loss of Rome, the 1929 treaty created the small state that exists today. You can read the full account on Wikipedia, and our overview page on the Vatican summarizes how the history shapes a visit.

What Is Inside Vatican Rome Italy?

Vatican City is a World Heritage Site that includes St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums, according to Wikipedia. For most visitors, two of those matter: the museums with the Sistine Chapel, and the basilica.

The museums have a sign-in point on the official site. The Vatican Museums official website lists collections including the Pio Clementino Museum, the Pinacoteca, Raphael’s Rooms and the Borgia Apartment. Our page on the Vatican Museums goes further into the collection.

The basilica is the church most people picture. Google Maps lists it open from 7 am to 7:10 pm, and one reviewer called it a free location, saying you can see most of the interior in about 40 minutes. Read our guide to St. Peter’s Basilica before you plan around it.

How Much Time Do You Need in Vatican Rome Italy?

Plan half a day for the museums and the Sistine Chapel, and add time for the basilica if you want it on the same day. The state is small, so distance is not the issue. Queues, security and the length of the museum route are what use your time.

A Google Maps reviewer who arrived near 5 pm for the museums waited 30 to 40 minutes for tickets and said the galleries were a rush before closing. A morning start avoids that. The guided tours in our data range from 2 hours to 4 hours, and the entry-only ticket is valid for one day.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

How Much Do Vatican Tickets Cost?

On the official site, a full Vatican Museums ticket is 20 euros without online booking. Students up to and including 25 years of age with proof of enrollment can buy a reduced ticket, according to the official student ticket page. That page warns that a visitor who buys a reduced ticket without entitlement must purchase a new ticket at the full rate, and the reduced ticket cannot be refunded.

Operator tickets cost more because they add services. In our data, an entry-only ticket with skip-the-ticket-line access is about 32 to 36 US dollars, a host-assisted ticket is about 53 US dollars, and guided tours with the basilica run from about 60 to 77 US dollars. These figures change, so check the booking page.

Our page on Vatican tickets compares the ticket types, and the one on Vatican museum tickets covers the official routes in detail.

How Do You Get to Vatican Rome Italy From Central Rome?

The simplest route is the metro. Line A stops at Ottaviano, San Pietro, Musei Vaticani, a station in the Prati district at the junction of Viale Giulio Cesare with Via Ottaviano and Via Barletta, according to Wikipedia. Our tour data says the walk from Ottaviano to one operator’s office is about 10 minutes.

Once you are near the museums, follow the listing for your ticket type. The entry-only ticket in our data says to go directly to the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano and use the dedicated entrance, and not to arrive outside your assigned time slot. The Crown Tours meeting point is on Via Mocenigo, about 2 minutes from the museum exit.

If you are going to the basilica, head for St. Peter’s Square instead. The two sights are not at the same gate, so check which one your voucher names. A walk between them is possible on the map, but the museum route and the basilica entrance are separate visits with their own entry steps, and the museums close earlier than the church in the evening.

Vatican, Holy See and Rome: What Is the Difference?

The Vatican is the state, the Holy See is the government of the church, and Rome is the Italian city around both. Wikipedia explains that Vatican City is governed by the Holy See, the episcopal see of the Diocese of Rome and the central authority of the church worldwide. The pope delegates authority to the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State.

That is why a ticket for the Vatican Museums is not a ticket for “Rome”, and why a Rome city pass will not automatically cover Vatican Rome Italy sights. The sights are run by the Vatican, and the rest of Rome is run by Italy. Always check who sells and who honors a pass before you rely on it.

For visitors, the day-to-day effect is small. The euro is the currency on both sides. Wikipedia notes that Vatican City is a de facto member of the Schengen Area, which also helps explain the easy crossing.

Should You Take a Tour of the Vatican in Rome?

A tour is worth it if you want the history explained and the logistics handled. The tours in our data cover the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and several add skip-the-line access to St. Peter’s Basilica as an option. Travelers praise knowledgeable guides who bring the rooms to life.

Read the inclusions carefully. One listing excludes a guided tour of the basilica, and another makes basilica entry optional. A reviewer who could not join a guide because a child used a wheelchair did the visit alone with an audio guide and still saw most of the sights.

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”

Who Can Buy a Reduced Ticket?

The reduced ticket is reserved for students up to and including 25 years of age who hold a document from their school or university confirming enrollment for the current year. This comes from the official student ticket page we linked above. A reduced ticket bought without entitlement has to be replaced with a full-price one, and the reduced one is cancelled without refund.

If you are not sure you qualify, buy the full ticket or an operator ticket, and keep your documents ready. An entry gate is a bad place to learn that a discount does not apply to you.

Where Can You Eat Near the Vatican?

Our place data lists Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci 27, open 11 am to 11 pm daily, with a rating of 4.7 from more than 18,000 reviews. It is a short distance from the museums and basilica by map, but we have no menu or price information, so check before you go.

Time your meal around your slot. A timed ticket is easy to miss if lunch runs late, and operators in our data say late arrival can mean no entry.

Remember too that hours differ by site. The Google Maps listings show the museums and the Sistine Chapel open from 8 am to 8 pm, and the basilica from 7 am to 7:10 pm, so a plan that starts at the church and ends at the museums, or the reverse, needs a time check for both.

Planning Your Vatican Rome Italy Visit
