Vatican Museum Opening Hours

By Updated 11 min read

Vatican Museum opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. The Museums also open on the last Sunday of most months from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and they close on Sundays otherwise and on a list of church holidays.

Vatican Museum opening hours follow a simple weekly pattern, but the exceptions are what trip the most visitors. I want you to know both before you pick a date, because a closed Sunday or a 6:00 p.m. arrival can cost you the Sistine Chapel. Everything below comes from the official Vatican Museums hours page, and that page is where you should confirm your date before you pay for anything.

What Are the Vatican Museum Opening Hours?

The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and the final entry is at 6:00 p.m., according to the official opening days and times. Visitors are asked to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time, so the real visiting window ends around 7:30 p.m.

That gap between 6:00 p.m. entry and 8:00 p.m. closing is the detail people misread. Entry at 6:00 p.m. does not mean two full hours inside. The Museums contain about 70,000 works, of which 20,000 are on display, and the Wikipedia article on the Vatican Museums counts 24 galleries in total. You cannot see that in 90 minutes without sprinting.

My advice is to treat the 6:00 p.m. final entry as an emergency option, not a plan. Aim to walk in at least three hours before closing, and earlier if you want the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel at a calm pace.

Vatican Museums Hours at a Glance

This table shows the weekly Vatican Museum opening hours and the one monthly exception, using the times on the official page. Exact times can change, so check the calendar linked in the section on closures before you travel.

Day Opening hours Final entry Ticket
Monday to Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Paid, timed slot
Last Sunday of the month 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 12:30 p.m. Free entry
Every other Sunday Closed None None

Two rules sit under the table. First, visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before the closing time. Second, the free Sunday does not run when it coincides with Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December. In those cases the Museums stay closed.

If you are comparing sources, you may see other numbers elsewhere, such as 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or a 2:00 p.m. close. Those do not match the current official page. I only use the official hours here, and I’d trust the Museums’ own calendar over any third-party list, including this one.

Last Entry and Leaving Time: When Should You Arrive?

You should arrive well before the 6:00 p.m. final entry, ideally in the morning. Vatican Museum opening hours look generous on paper, but the usable window is shorter. The official site sets final entry at 6:00 p.m. and asks visitors to clear the halls 30 minutes before closing, so a late arrival leaves you very little time.

One traveler described exactly this problem after turning up late in the day:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That experience shows the trade-off. A 5:00 p.m. arrival got that visitor through the galleries, but only in a rush. A walk-up purchase also added a wait of 30 to 40 minutes, which ate into the visit.

Here is how I would split the day:

  • Early slot (8:00 to 10:00 a.m.): best if you want the full route, including the Sistine Chapel at the end.
  • Midday slot: fine if you book ahead and do not mind a longer day.
  • Afternoon slot (after 3:00 p.m.): only for visitors who plan a short, focused route.
  • Final-entry slot (6:00 p.m.): a last resort. You will be moving fast the whole time.

The Sistine Chapel is the last room on the visitor route, so a short visit means you reach it tired, or not at all. That is the strongest reason to book a morning time.

Is the Vatican Museum Open on Sunday?

No, the Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of each month. On that day they open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m., and entry is free, according to the official hours page.

Sunday Vatican Museum opening hours are the shortest of the week, and free does not mean easy. The official page notes that guided tours are possible on that Sunday by reservation, which tells me the day is organized, not casual. I would expect it to be the busiest and slowest day of the month, so I would only choose it if saving on the ticket matters more than comfort.

Because the free Sunday runs on a short window, count backward. If you want two hours inside, you need to be at the entrance by about 11:00 a.m. And remember the exceptions: when the last Sunday lands on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December, the Museums do not open.

For November 2026, the last Sunday is 29 November. Confirm it on the official calendar, because I’d rather you check than assume.

Which Days Is the Vatican Museum Closed?

Vatican Museum opening hours do not apply on closure days, so check the list below against your travel dates first.

The Vatican Museums close on every Sunday except the last Sunday of the month, plus a fixed list of feast days. The official closure list names these dates:

  • 1 and 6 January
  • 11 February
  • 19 March
  • 6 April
  • 1 May
  • 29 June
  • 14 and 15 August
  • 1 November
  • 8, 25 and 26 December

These match the Vatican public holidays in the holiday data for Vatican City, which include the Epiphany, the anniversary of the foundation of Vatican City, Saint Joseph’s Day, Saints Peter and Paul, the Assumption, All Saints and the Immaculate Conception. The Museums close on additional days beyond the public holiday list, such as 14 August, so the Museums’ own list is the one to follow.

For the exact closure calendar, use the official museum openings and closures 2026 to 2027 calendar. If you want the full year laid out, my guide to Vatican Museums opening hours in 2026 walks through it.

Temporary Closures to Plan Around This Winter

Besides the fixed list, the Museums post temporary closures for individual sectors. The official page currently lists these dates:

  • Ethnological Museum Anima Mundi: closes at 5:00 p.m. on 9 November, last entrance 4:30 p.m.
  • All sectors: closed from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on 10 November, so the morning opening shifts to 9:00 a.m.
  • Castel Gandolfo Museum Complex: closed from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on 7 December.
  • Sistine Chapel: closes at 6:00 p.m. on 4 December and 18 December, with the last entrance at 5:30 p.m.

The Sistine Chapel closures matter most. If you hold a late slot on 4 or 18 December, you could reach the end of the route and find the chapel shut. On those two days, I would book a morning or midday time instead.

This list changes as the Museums add or remove entries. Treat it as a snapshot and check the official page for temporary closures the week you travel. As of November 2026, these are the latest published figures I have.

How Vatican Museum Opening Hours Compare With St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica keeps its own schedule, and it is not the same as the Museums. The official Basilica hours page gives 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from 1 June to 25 October 2026, and 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027.

The dome has shorter hours. In the winter period it runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and in the summer period from 29 March to 25 October 2026 it runs from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Guided visits to the Basilica run Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the last registration at 5:00 p.m.

In winter that means the Museums close at 8:00 p.m., the Basilica at 7:00 p.m. and the dome at 5:00 p.m.

That order matters for planning. The Basilica is free to enter but access is not guaranteed because crowd control can change it, as one tour listing notes in its exclusions. If you want both sights in one day, I would do the Museums first and the Basilica afterward, but only if your Museums slot ends by midafternoon.

Vatican Museum Hours Planning: Booking a Time Slot

Book a timed slot before you go, because the ticket is valid for the time on it. Once you know the Vatican Museum opening hours for your date, choose a slot that leaves at least three hours before closing. For example, one skip-the-line ticket listing says it is valid only for the reserved time and that latecomers will not be guaranteed entrance. Treat your slot as a firm appointment.

If you want to compare ticket options, I’d start with Vatican tickets online so you can see the formats side by side. For a plain entry ticket, these are the tours I would look at first, and each lists price, rating and reviews:

All three are entry tickets without a guide. The first goes directly to the Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano, and you show your ticket to the security guards, then scan it at the box office after the security check. The meeting details differ for the other two, because they use a nearby office, so read the meeting point before you choose.

One buyer summed up the appeal of booking ahead:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”
Sukanta, Ireland, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

If you would rather have the story told as you walk, a guided option covers the route and the Sistine Chapel:

Guided tours carry a higher price in return for a guide and a pre-arranged entry. Some also offer St. Peter’s Basilica as an option, but check what is included, since reviewers say the Basilica part is sometimes unclear. My own rule is simple: if you have a short window, book a guided tour, and if you want to move at your own pace, book an entry ticket and an audio guide.

Getting to the Entrance on Time

The Museums are on the north side of Vatican City, and the nearest Rome Metro stop is Ottaviano, on Line A. The station is named Ottaviano – San Pietro – Musei Vaticani and sits in the Prati district. One tour operator describes the walk from Ottaviano to its office as about 10 minutes.

Give yourself extra time for security. Your slot time is the time you should be at the entrance, not the time you leave your hotel. I’d plan to be there 15 minutes early, which matches what one ticket provider asks for its redemption point.

Many visitors want a meal before or after. Two places near the Museums are worth knowing:

Vatican Museums by the Numbers

A few figures help explain why Vatican Museum opening hours deserve your attention. Each one links to its source.

  • Visitors in 2021: the Wikidata record shows 1,612,530 visitors per year for 2021, a pandemic-affected year. The Wikipedia article says the Museums drew 6.8 million visitors in 2024, which makes them the second most-visited art museum in the world after the Louvre.
  • Founded: 1506, according to Wikidata. The collection began with the marble sculpture Laocoön and His Sons, found on 14 January 1506.
  • Opened to the public: 1771, per the same Wikidata record.
  • Works on display: about 20,000 of roughly 70,000, per Wikipedia.
  • Galleries: 24, with the Sistine Chapel as the last room visited.
  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km², with a population of 949 in 2024.

What this means for you: a state this small receives millions of visitors in a single museum, so a slot with fewer people matters more than a few extra minutes of opening time.

Your Plan for Vatican Museum Opening Hours

Here is my short checklist for using Vatican Museum opening hours well. Pick a Monday to Saturday date that is not on the closure list. Book a morning slot. Arrive early, and keep the 30-minute clear-out rule in mind. If your trip falls on the last Sunday of a month, use the free entry only if you accept a crowded two-hour window.

For the broader picture of what is inside, see the Vatican Museums hub and the main Vatican Museum guide. If you only need the weekday schedule in a different format, the Vatican Museum hours page covers it, and for ticket-plus-hours questions the Vatican Museum tickets and opening hours page ties them together. And if you also want the wider city picture, what are the Vatican opening hours? gives a shorter answer.

When you are ready, see every ticket type side by side and choose the slot that fits your day. I am an independent guide, not the official ticket office, so confirm hours and prices on the Museums’ own site before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vatican museum free?

Entry is free on the last Sunday of each month, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m. The official site lists exceptions when that Sunday falls on a major feast day. On every other open day you need a paid ticket.

What is the address of the Vatican museums?

The Vatican Museums sit at 00120 Città del Vaticano, Vatican City. Visitors with a ticket go to the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano. The nearest Rome Metro stop is Ottaviano, on Line A.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sundays that are not the last Sunday of the month, because the Museums are closed. Also avoid the church holidays on the official closure list, such as 1 January, 1 May, 15 August, 1 November and 25 December. Check the official calendar before you buy anything.

How to visit the Vatican?

Pick an open day, book a timed slot in advance and arrive at your entrance at the time on your ticket. Plan to start your visit well before the 6:00 p.m. final entry, because visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. St. Peter's Basilica has its own, separate opening hours.

What time does the Vatican Museum close?

The Vatican Museums close at 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and the halls must be empty 30 minutes earlier. The final entry is at 6:00 p.m. On the free last Sunday, closing time is 2:00 p.m.
