St Peter's Bascilica (St. Peter's Basilica) with Michelangelo's dome rising above St. Peter's Square in Vatican City

St Peter's Bascilica

By Updated 10 min read

St Peter's Bascilica is a common misspelling of St. Peter's Basilica, the great church in Vatican City built over the tomb of Saint Peter. Plan on daily opening from about 7 am, security screening in the square, shoulders and knees covered, and a separate booking for the dome.

St Peter’s Bascilica is how many travelers type the name of the great church that stands at the heart of Vatican City, though the correct spelling is St. Peter’s Basilica. I will use the proper spelling from here on, and I will answer the questions I hear most: where it is, when it opens, what to wear, what costs extra and how to avoid a wasted morning. The facts below come from the official basilica website, Wikipedia, Wikidata and tour listings, and I flag where you should confirm details yourself.

What Is St Peter’s Bascilica and Why Do Visitors Come?

St Peter’s Bascilica, properly St. Peter’s Basilica, is the church that rises directly behind St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Visitors come for three things: the art and architecture inside, the dome designed by Michelangelo, and the tradition that the church stands over the burial place of the apostle Peter.

That last point is the reason for the name. Saint Peter was one of the Twelve Apostles, and Catholic tradition treats him as the first bishop of Rome. Early Christian writers say he was martyred in Rome, traditionally on Vatican Hill. Everything about the basilica, from its position to the inscription around its dome, points back to him.

I find it helps to think of the basilica as three visits in one. There is the main church, which any visitor can see after security. There are the ticketed extras, namely the dome, the Treasury Museum and the Necropolis. And there is the square outside, which is a monument in its own right. Decide early which of the three you want, because that decides your booking.

Where Is St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican?

The basilica sits at the west end of St. Peter’s Square, in Vatican City, an enclave inside Rome. The address on the map listing is Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Vatican City, and the official basilica website is the place to check for updates.

The square is directly in front of the church, and the Wikipedia entry notes it lies just west of the Borgo neighborhood. If you are arriving by Metro, one tour listing says the Ottaviano stop on Line A is about a 10-minute walk from its meeting office. Note that this operator says plainly that St. Peter’s Square is not its meeting point, which is a good reminder to read your voucher closely.

If you are comparing how different pages describe the location, my guide to St. Peter’s in Vatican City covers the geography in more detail, and the question of how the church relates to Rome is handled in the Rome-side view of St. Peter’s.

What Are the Opening Hours of St. Peter’s Basilica?

The map listing for the basilica shows the same hours every day of the week: 7 am to 7:10 pm. Treat that as a rough range, not a promise, because the basilica closes for services and special events, and the official site is where changes appear first.

Here is how I would use the hours. Go early, since one visitor review says they arrived at 6:45 am, found a line already forming and still got in quickly. Late afternoon is the other option when the day’s tour groups thin out, but leave yourself time before closing.

One tour listing adds a detail worth knowing: its basilica access is not available on Wednesday mornings. I would not plan a basilica visit on a Wednesday morning without checking the official site first.

Can We Visit St Peter’s Bascilica Without a Ticket?

Yes, visitors can walk into the main church without booking a guided tour, but everyone must pass the security checks in St. Peter’s Square first. The official site says these checks are mandatory for all visitors, including those with online bookings. I can’t give you an entrance price from my sources, so confirm any fee on the official site before you go.

One Google Maps reviewer wrote that a visit with no extras took about 40 minutes:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

That matches how I would plan it. A quick look at the nave takes under an hour, while the extras add real time. The dome averages about an hour on its own, according to the official FAQ. If you want the history behind what you are seeing, a guide earns their fee here, because the church holds centuries of layered art that signs alone do not explain.

If you are weighing a free walk-in against a booked slot, I would book if you are visiting in peak season or traveling with a tight schedule. You can book Vatican tickets online and compare the options side by side before you commit.

What Should You Wear to St Peter’s Bascilica?

Your shoulders and knees must be covered. The official FAQ for the dome states this rule directly: clothing appropriate for a place of worship is required, and shoulders and knees must always be covered.

This is the rule that catches people out. A sleeveless top or short shorts can mean being turned away, which is a painful way to lose a booked time slot. I tell friends to carry a light scarf or a thin cardigan in their bag, and to wear trousers or a long skirt on any day that might get warm.

Bags matter too. The official FAQ says only small personal bags are permitted on the dome climb, and large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed. Pack light, because I cannot confirm what storage is offered at other entrances.

Saint Peter’s Basilica Tickets and Tours Explained

The official site sells separate products for the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis, the dome and guided tours of the basilica. The dome ticket booked online includes entry to the basilica, which you need to do 90 minutes before your dome time, plus a digital audio guide, according to the official dome FAQ.

Most visitors who book through a marketplace choose a combined tour of the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the basilica. Here is how the listed tours compare, using the prices and review data in the brief:

Tour Provider Price (USD) Rating Duration
Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s Basilica Tour Brastours $55.15 4.59 3 hours
Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s Basilica Tour Enjoy Rome $60.17 4.27 2 - 3 hours
Rome: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica Access Real Barcelona Tours $67.97 4.32 2.5 - 3 hours

Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St Peter’s Basilica Tour City Wonders $76.88 4.63 2 - 3 hours

Prices and availability change, so treat the table as a snapshot and check each listing. The detail that matters most is in the fine print. In several listings the basilica is an optional extra that you select when booking, and one explicitly excludes a guided tour of the basilica. If you want the church included, read the option names before you pay.

For a first visit, my advice is to book a small-group tour that includes the basilica. The tours below are the ones I would compare first:

If you would rather see every ticket type side by side, compare Vatican tickets on my main page. For the full picture of what is on offer, the St. Peter’s Basilica topic hub collects every guide I have written on the church.

St. Peter’s Basilica Inside: Dome, Michelangelo and the Tomb

The dome is the feature most visitors remember. According to the official dome page, Michelangelo conceived and built it up to the drum, and Giacomo della Porta completed it with Domenico Fontana between 1588 and 1590, raising it in 22 months with 800 laborers. Its interior is covered with mosaics by artists directing under Marcello Provenzale between 1598 and 1613, spread across about 3,000 square meters.

If you plan to climb, know what you are getting. The lift goes only as far as the terrace level, and from the inner ring you must climb 320 steps to reach the outer ring, per the official FAQ. The same page says the full visit lasts about an hour on average. Two tours in my list offer the dome as an add-on, and the Crown Tours listing mentions a dome visit with the elevator to the basilica terrace.

On the floor level, the tour listings highlight Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s Baldachin. These are the sights I would find first with a map, then spend my time on before wandering.

Under the floor lies the other major draw. The Vatican Necropolis runs under the central nave and contains ancient Roman and early Christian tombs, according to the official site. Wikipedia’s article on Saint Peter’s tomb explains that the necropolis dates from about AD 130 to AD 500, and that it was partly torn down and filled with earth around AD 330 to support the first basilica under Constantine. Pope Paul VI stated on 26 June 1968 that the relics of Saint Peter had been identified in a manner considered convincing. That is the careful way to put it, and I would stay with that wording.

“Peter's Basilica that includes several graves and a structure said by Vatican authorities to have been built to memorialize the location of Saint Peter's grave.”

St Peter’s Bascilica by the Numbers

These figures come from Wikidata and the official basilica site, and they help set expectations for your visit:

  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km². The whole state is tiny, which is why the basilica, square and museums sit so close together. Source
  • Vatican City founded: 11 February 1929. The sovereign state that surrounds the basilica is relatively young, even though the church is centuries old. Source
  • Vatican City population: 949 (2024). Fewer than a thousand residents share the enclave with millions of visitors. Source
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. Vatican City carries this designation, which is part of why security and rules are strict. Source
  • St. Peter’s Square architect: Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Italian Baroque style. The colonnades you walk through were designed with crowds in mind. Source
  • Dome steps: 320 from the inner ring to the outer ring. This is the part of the climb after the lift. Source
  • Lantern height: 117 meters inside, with the cross above 133 meters. The official page gives both figures. Source

St. Peter’s Square and Nearby Places to Plan Around

Your visit starts in the square, so give it time. Wikipedia says Gian Lorenzo Bernini redesigned it from 1667 to 1676 under Pope Alexander VII, so that the greatest number of people could see the Pope give his blessing. The Vatican obelisk at its center was erected on the site in 1586, and the granite fountain Bernini built in 1675 matches an earlier one by Carlo Maderno from 1613.

How to Plan Your St Peter’s Bascilica Visit

My plan for a first-time visitor is simple. Decide whether you want the walk-in visit, a guided tour or the dome. Book anything with a time slot ahead, and bring the QR codes the official site sends you, because the dome FAQ says they are mandatory at access checks. Allow for the security line in the square before every entry.

On the day, dress for a place of worship, carry only a small bag and arrive early. If you booked a combined tour, check the meeting point on your voucher, since several of them do not start at the square. If you are unsure about a price, the ECB reference rates are the right place to convert any euro fee into dollars on the day you book.

When you are ready, here are two more tours I would look at, both rated well by travelers:

That is the whole plan for St Peter’s Bascilica. Pick your visit type, confirm times on the official site, and book the extras early, and you will spend your time inside the church rather than in a queue.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear jeans to Vatican?

Yes, as long as your shoulders and knees are covered. The official basilica site says clothing appropriate for a place of worship is required, so full-length jeans with a top that covers your shoulders are fine, while shorts and sleeveless tops are not.

Can you walk from Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica?

Several guided tours in the brief combine the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the basilica in one visit, so the two are meant to be seen on the same day. I would confirm the exact route with your tour operator, because some tours list the basilica as an optional add-on and use a separate entrance.

What is the official website for buying tickets to the Vatican Museums?

The Vatican Museums run their own official site at museivaticani.va. Tickets for the basilica extras, such as the dome, the Treasury Museum and the Necropolis, are sold separately on basilicasanpietro.va.

Is St Peter's Basilica the Vatican?

No. The basilica is the most famous building inside Vatican City, the small papal enclave in Rome, but the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are separate sites with their own tickets and entrance.
