Catholic Church Vatican City is both an idea and an address. The Catholic Church is a worldwide community of believers, and Vatican City is the small state, 0.44 km² on Wikidata, whose head of state is the pope.

I wrote this guide to separate the two, then show you what a visit looks like: which sacred sites you can enter, what you must wear, how the Jubilee years fit in and which tickets make sense. The questions are in the order most visitors ask them.

Catholic Church Vatican City: What the Phrase Covers

The Holy See is the sovereign body of the Catholic Church, and Vatican City State is a separate state. The Vatican’s own site says both have full recognition of their distinct international personalities. In practice you meet both at once, because one tiny territory holds the pope’s state, the Church’s most visited buildings and a working government.

That is why people asking about the Catholic Church Vatican City link want different things. Some want the institution: who leads it, how it relates to the state, what “Holy See” means. Others want the buildings: St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. This page covers both.

For the institutional story, my page on how the Roman Catholic Church relates to Vatican City goes deeper. For the buildings, the wider guide to the Vatican’s churches is the better map.

Who Runs the Catholic Church and Vatican City?

Pope Leo XIV is listed as head of state of Vatican City, and Raffaella Petrini as head of government, according to Wikidata. The state’s Fundamental Law reserves its relations with other states to the Roman Pontiff, who acts through the Secretariat of State.

That wording comes from Article 6 of the Fundamental Law of 13 May 2023. In all other cases the President of the Governorate represents the state, and the Governorate takes part in the international institutions of which the Holy See is a member. Because the state is an enclave, the Governorate also arranges the supplies, connections and public services it needs from outside.

For a visitor, two layers sit on top of each other. The Holy See speaks for the Church, while Vatican City State handles the territory you walk through. You do not need to untangle them to plan a trip. It does explain why official information comes from different .va sites for the state, the Museums and the Basilica.

Vatican City by the Numbers

These are the figures I find most useful when planning, all taken from Wikidata’s record for Vatican City.

  • 0.44 km² is the area. The sites in this guide sit close together, though queues and security make the day longer than the map suggests.
  • 11 February 1929 is the inception date, so the state itself is under a century old.
  • 949 residents was the population in 2024. Almost everyone you see inside is a visitor or a worker.
  • World Heritage Site is the heritage designation, which is why conservation rules are strict.
  • Italian and Latin are the official languages. Signs and staff announcements will usually be in Italian, so a translation app helps.
  • The euro is the currency, so you pay the way you would in Rome.

The Catholic Church in Vatican City: Sites You Can Enter

The three sacred sites most visitors want are St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums, and they follow different schedules. The Museums and the Sistine Chapel are listed as open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm and closed on Sunday, while the Basilica is listed as open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm. Confirm today’s times on the official sites before you go, because hours change.

St. Peter’s Basilica

The Basilica is the building most people picture when they think of the Catholic Church Vatican City sites. One fast-track Basilica tour lists Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s Baldachin, the dome view and the Papal Tombs among its highlights. Entry to the church itself is free of charge, but one ticket listing warns that access is not guaranteed and may vary with crowd control. The dome needs its own reservation.

The Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums

You reach the Sistine Chapel through the Vatican Museums, so one entry ticket covers both. The Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket lists Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam as the headline sight. Relaxation areas with seats sit along the route, including the Courtyard of the Pinecone, according to the official visitor information.

Crowds are the pain point here. One reviewer of the Sistine Chapel put it plainly:

“If you can, you need to visit this place. The relics and treasures are just incredible. You definitely need more than one day to take it all in. The crowds are brutal so try and go after 3pm when most of the cruise ship tours are over.”
Kíke · Google Maps review about Sistine Chapel

I’d take that advice seriously and plan the Sistine Chapel for the late afternoon if your slot allows it.

Castel Gandolfo, the pope’s other palace

The Vatican Museums also run the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo. A 2026 exhibition there, El Greco in the mirror, opened on 14 March as a tribute to Pope Leo XIV in the year of the eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Castel Gandolfo ticket includes all current exhibitions, the Garden of the Moor and the Secret Garden, with a guided or self-guided option. It is a quieter way to see Catholic heritage if the main sites feel too crowded.

Which ticket should you book first?

If you have one day, I’d start with the Museums and Sistine Chapel, because that is where timed entry matters most. Start with the ticket options here to compare entry-only tickets with guided tours, then add the Basilica as a separate stop. The two options below are the simplest starting points: Museums entry for people who want to wander at their own pace, and a Basilica ticket with dome access.

Do You Have to Be Catholic to Visit the Catholic Church Vatican City Sites?

No. The visitor rules published by the Vatican Museums talk about clothing, bags and conduct, not about faith. You do not need to be Catholic to enter, but you are expected to behave as a guest in a place of worship.

The one place religion appears in the rules is the standard of decorum. The official page says it extends to visible personal objects and distinctive signs, such as tattoos, that may offend Catholic morality, the Catholic religion and common decency. My advice is simple: cover anything that could be read as provocative and treat the Basilica as a working church.

If you want the faith side explained for non-Catholic visitors, what makes the Vatican Catholic is a gentle place to start.

What Is the Dress Code for the Catholic Church in Vatican City?

Sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted. The Vatican Museums’ visitor information says entry to the Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors.

This is the most common reason people are turned away, so I would pack for it rather than hope. Bring a light scarf or cardigan for your shoulders, and wear trousers or a skirt that covers the knee.

Bags are the second pain point. The official page requires visitors to leave luggage, suitcases, rucksacks and packages judged too big by staff in the cloakroom, which is free of charge. Knives, scissors and metal tools must also go in the cloakroom, and animals are not allowed, apart from guide dogs for blind or partially sighted visitors and animals for certified pet therapy. If you plan to continue to the Basilica, the same page advises not leaving your baggage in the Museums.

Wondering which churches stand inside Vatican City besides the three famous ones? That page lists them, and the same dress expectations apply as a rule of respect.

How Jubilee Years Shape a Catholic Church Vatican City Visit

A jubilee is a special year of remission of sins, debts and universal pardon, and Catholic jubilees normally involve a pilgrimage to Rome. Wikipedia says the tradition dates to 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII convoked a holy year, and that ordinary jubilees have generally been held every 25 or 50 years since.

For visitors, jubilee years matter because pilgrims come to Rome in larger numbers. The most recent ordinary holy year, the Jubilee Year of Hope, ran from 24 December 2024 to 6 January 2026. As of November 2026, the present extraordinary holy year is the Jubilee of St. Francis, which began on 10 January 2026 and ends on 10 January 2027. An extraordinary jubilee is also planned for 2033 to mark the 2,000th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The Wikipedia page for the jubilee opens with a definition worth reading:

“A jubilee is a special year of remission of sins, debts and universal pardon.”

Vatican City Catholic Church Tickets and Tours

Pick your ticket by the experience you want, not just the price. The listings below range from about $28 for a fast-track Basilica entry with dome access to about $71 for a guided tour combining the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. All prices are in US dollars on the booking page and can change.

  • Museums and Sistine Chapel entry, $36.21: timed entry, audio guide if you select it, no guide. Its meeting instructions send you to the Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano, and it excludes the Basilica dome.
  • Basilica with fast-track dome entry, $27.63: official audio guide and dome access. You meet on Via di Porta Angelica, about 50 meters from the right side of the colonnade, and can arrive from 15 minutes before your time.
  • Basilica priority access with dome and crypt, $52.37: a two-hour tour with an English-speaking guide and a pre-reserved dome ticket with elevator access.
  • Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica tour, $60.17 to $71.31: guided options that cover all three sites. Ratings in the listing data run from 4.27 to 4.65, and travelers say they value skipping lines but ask for clearer information about what is included at the Basilica.

Scale matters when you read ratings. The Museums and Sistine Chapel entry ticket holds a 4.48 rating across more than 160,000 reviews, which tells me the process works at volume. The Basilica dome option holds the same 4.48 across about 3,100 reviews, and the Walks of Italy priority tour sits at 4.66 across about 1,600. Travelers on the entry ticket say timed entry makes access easier, while some ask for clearer directions to the correct queue, so read the meeting instructions twice and arrive inside your slot, not before it.

My pick depends on your day. If you are short on time and want context, I’d book a guided combination tour. If you want to linger in front of art, an entry ticket with an audio guide gives you more freedom. One traveler who nearly went without a guide said it well:

“Volo was fantastic! Enthusiastic and full of knowledge. We were just going to make our own way around but I’m so glad we booked this tour. I learnt so much and had a great time. Thank you”
Rachel, United Kingdom, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican: St. Peter's Basilica with Fast-Track Dome Entry

The reviews in the listing data are mixed on one point worth noting: some travelers say clearer information on security waits, even with skip-the-line access, would help. Build in time for the checkpoint, and you’ll avoid the stress.

Final Tips for Visiting the Catholic Church in Vatican City

Book your Museums slot first, dress for the Basilica, and leave bags at the hotel. That order solves the three biggest problems: sold-out slots, dress-code refusals and cloakroom delays.

Here is my short checklist for the Catholic Church Vatican City visit:

  1. Confirm hours and closures on the official sites, since Sunday hours differ between the Museums and the Basilica.
  2. Choose a ticket type that fits your pace and keep your voucher on your phone.
  3. Cover your shoulders and knees, and skip the hat.
  4. Allow time for the free cloakroom and the security check.
  5. Keep the dome and any crypt visit as separate reservations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official website for buying tickets to the Vatican museums?

The Vatican Museums run their own official site at museivaticani.va, and that is where official tickets are sold. Third-party sellers, including the GetYourGuide tours on this site, are separate products with their own prices, so compare them with the official page before you book.

What is the latest news on Pope Leo today?

I can't track daily headlines here. Wikidata lists Leo XIV as head of state of Vatican City, and the Vatican Museums describe a 2026 Castel Gandolfo exhibition as a tribute to him. For current news and schedules, use the official Vatican sites.

Are all citizens of Vatican City Catholic?

I don't have a verified breakdown of residents' faith, so I won't guess. What is documented is that Wikidata gives Vatican City a population of 949 in 2024, and that the state is led by the pope, Leo XIV.

Is Vatican City a country?

Vatican City is a sovereign state that Wikidata dates to 11 February 1929. The Vatican's own site says the Holy See and Vatican City State both have full recognition of their distinct international personalities.
