Sistine Chapel Tickets

By Updated 11 min read

Sistine Chapel tickets are Vatican Museums tickets, because the chapel is visited on the museum route and I found no separate chapel-only entry. The official full ticket costs 20 euros (about $22), and skip-the-line listings run from about $32 to $110.

Sistine Chapel tickets are really Vatican Museums tickets, because you reach the chapel at the end of the museum route. That single fact answers most of the confusion, and it shapes every choice: what to pay, when to go and whether to book skip-the-line entry. This guide gives the official prices and hours, then compares six listed options.

I write this as an independent guide, and this site is not the ticket office. To compare every entry type side by side, you can compare Vatican tickets after reading this page.

What Are Sistine Chapel Tickets?

Sistine Chapel tickets are entry tickets to the Vatican Museums, which include the chapel. The official site states that the entry ticket for the Vatican Museums entitles you to visit the museums and the Sistine Chapel only on the day the ticket is issued.

Wikipedia describes the chapel as a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the pope’s official residence in Vatican City. Its fame rests on the frescoes by Michelangelo, most of all the ceiling and The Last Judgment. It also serves as the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected.

Because there is one ticket for both, searches such as “tickets to the Sistine Chapel,” “Vatican museum tickets with Sistine Chapel” and “Vatican and Sistine Chapel tickets” all lead to the same product. My guide to Vatican Museum tickets covers the wider ticket picture, and the page on Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel tickets walks through the combined entry.

  • Size: the Sistine Chapel is 40.9 m long, 13.4 m wide and 21 m high, so expect a big room that fills fast.
  • Age: the chapel’s inception is listed as 1473, with Baccio Pontelli as architect and Sixtus IV as the one who commissioned it.
  • Ceiling: the ceiling measures 4,093 cm by 1,341 cm and dates from 1508, a fresco by Michelangelo that you view from the floor.
  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km², which is why the chapel, the museums and the basilica sit so close.
  • Population: 949 in 2024, so almost everyone in the queue is a visitor.
  • Currency: the euro, which is why official prices appear in euros above.

How Much Are Sistine Chapel Tickets?

The official full ticket costs 20 euros (about $22) without online booking, according to the Vatican Museums price page. The reduced ticket costs 10 euros (about $11), and a reduced ticket with a “Skip the Line” booking on the official website costs 10 euros plus 5 euros (about $17). Dollar figures use the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06 and are rounded.

Here are the official prices listed on that page:

  • Full entry ticket: 20.00 euros (about $22) without online booking.
  • Reduced entry ticket: 10.00 euros (about $11) without online booking, or 10.00 plus 5.00 euros (about $17) with a Skip the Line booking.
  • Reduced ticket for schools: 5.00 euros (about $6), or 5.00 plus 2.00 euros (about $8) with a Skip the Line booking.
  • Reduced ticket for students: 10.00 euros (about $11), or 10.00 plus 5.00 euros (about $17) with a Skip the Line booking.
  • Papal Palace and Secret Garden of Castel Gandolfo: 12.00 euros (about $13) for full entry.

The same page says tickets cannot be refunded and warns about scams and websites with similar domains that may charge significantly higher prices. It names the museums’ own portal as the only official site for online tickets. Prices change, so confirm them before you pay. For a full price breakdown by seller and type, see my page on the Sistine Chapel ticket price.

Who Can Get Sistine Chapel Tickets for Free?

Entry is free on the last Sunday of the month, subject to the museums’ calendar, and for children below the age of 7, according to the official price page. It is also free for visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67 percent, and a companion is included when the visitor is not self-sufficient.

Disabled visitors and a companion are guaranteed priority skip-the-line entry. Their free tickets cannot be booked online, because they are issued at the “Special Permits” or “Welcome Desk” desks in the entrance hall on presentation of certification. A European Disability Card also counts as documentation.

The last Sunday has shorter hours. The official opening times list 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, with the final entry at 12:30 pm, and guided tours possible by reservation. That day does not apply when it falls on Easter Sunday, June 29, December 25, December 26 or December 31. Free entry means no ticket cost, but it does not mean no wait, so plan extra time.

When Are the Sistine Chapel and Museums Open?

The museums, and with them the chapel, are open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with the final entry at 6:00 pm. The official page also asks visitors to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing.

Closed days include Sundays other than the last one of the month, and these dates:

  • January 1 and 6
  • February 11
  • March 19
  • April 6
  • May 1
  • June 29
  • August 14 and 15
  • November 1
  • December 8, 25 and 26

The page also lists temporary closures by sector. For the chapel itself, it lists closing from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on December 4 and December 18, with the last entrance at 5:30 pm. Map listings for the chapel and the museums show 8 am to 8 pm daily except Sunday, but the official calendar is the one to trust. A reviewer shares a timing tip:

“If you can, you need to visit this place. The relics and treasures are just incredible. You definitely need more than one day to take it all in. The crowds are brutal so try and go after 3pm when most of the cruise ship tours are over.”
Kíke · Google Maps review about Sistine Chapel

That is one traveler’s view, not a rule, and I have no crowd data for any hour. It does fit the closing-time rules above, which leave less time for a late arrival.

Which Sistine Chapel Tickets Can You Buy Online?

Beyond the official portal, sellers list skip-the-line products that include the museums and the chapel. The table puts six of them side by side, using the listed price, length and rating.

Tours And Tours skip-the-line ticket $32.31 1 day 4.23 (13,313) Fast-track entry; no guide
Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket $36.21 1 day 4.48 (160,009) Optional audio guide; no guide
Touristation skip-the-line ticket $40.11 1 day 4.23 (8,954) Basilica upgrade, hop-on bus or gardens minibus on some options

Gray Line group tour $109.87 3 to 3.5 hours 4.32 (10,589) Group of up to 20; museum ticket and priority Sistine entrance

Prices are in US dollars as listed and change by date. The cheaper options give you a place in line and leave the rest to you. The more expensive ones add a host or a guide.

If you want an audio guide, a bus pass or a guided group, these three are worth comparing:

Do You Need Skip-the-Line Sistine Chapel Tickets?

You do not need them, but many travelers say they save time. One reviewer of a skip-the-line listing wrote the following:

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

That is a personal estimate, not an official wait time, and I cannot verify the 100 meter figure. The official site sells a “Skip the Line” booking at an extra 5 euros (about $6) on the reduced ticket, so it is possible to skip the line without a third-party seller. My page on whether you need tickets for the Sistine Chapel goes into the yes-or-no question.

The seller listings add two cautions. The Tours And Tours ticket is valid only for the reserved time, and latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line access. The Gray Line group says latecomers cannot be accommodated. If you arrive late, you may lose the advantage you paid for.

Where Do You Collect Sistine Chapel Tickets?

Collection points depend on the product, so read your confirmation. For the entry ticket listing, go to the Vatican Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, show your ticket to the security guards and scan it at the box office labeled CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI. Paper and mobile vouchers are accepted.

Other listings use offices nearby:

  • Tours And Tours: redeem at Via Germanico 8 and arrive 15 minutes before the start time.
  • Inside Out Italy: check in at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, then your host escorts you to the entrance.
  • City Wonders: meet your host at the bottom of the steps across from the museums entrance, next to Caffè Vaticano on the corner of Viale Vaticano and Via Tunisi.
  • Gray Line: meet in Piazza del Risorgimento in front of Bar L’Ottagono, where the team wears pink uniforms.

What Will You See After You Buy Sistine Chapel Tickets?

You will see the Sistine Chapel’s frescoes, led by Michelangelo’s ceiling and The Last Judgment. The Vatican Museums’ site says the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who had the old Cappella Magna restored between 1477 and 1480.

Here is the story in brief, from the official chapel page and Wikipedia:

  1. The walls were painted in 1481 and 1482 by a team that included Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli.
  2. Sixtus IV consecrated the chapel on 15 August 1483, dedicating it to Our Lady of the Assumption.
  3. Julius II entrusted Michelangelo with the ceiling in 1508, and the work was finished in October 1512.
  4. Julius II inaugurated the chapel with a solemn Mass on 1 November 1512.
  5. Michelangelo painted The Last Judgment between 1535 and 1541, according to Wikipedia.

Wikipedia’s article on the ceiling notes that its nine central scenes come from the Book of Genesis, including The Creation of Adam, and that it was most recently restored from 1980 to 1994. Wikidata lists the chapel at about 40.9 meters long, 13.4 meters wide and 21 meters high. Here is how the ceiling’s article opens:

“The Sistine Chapel ceiling (Italian: Soffitto della Cappella Sistina), painted in fresco by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.”
Wikipedia · Wikipedia: Sistine Chapel ceiling

Most listings mention The Creation of Adam, which is the scene many people come to see.

Is There a Sistine Chapel Only Ticket?

I found no chapel-only ticket, because the chapel is part of the Vatican Museums route. Every listing I reviewed sells the museums and the chapel together, and the official price page describes one entry ticket for both.

That matters for planning. If you want only the chapel, you still pay for the museums, and you still walk through them to reach it. A reviewer of the museums describes how long the full visit can take, and the length is worth budgeting for. The listings range from a 1-hour product to a 3.5-hour guided tour, so pick the length that matches your patience. A shorter product suits someone who wants the highlights, and a longer one suits someone who wants the stories behind each room.

If you are weighing the combined option against a basilica-first plan, remember that the two have separate entrances and hours. The basilica listing shows 7 am to 7:10 pm daily, while the museums and chapel show 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday. My page on Sistine Chapel entrance tickets covers the entry process in more depth.

Can You Visit the Sistine Chapel With Other Vatican Sights?

Yes, the chapel is part of the museum route, and some listings add the basilica. The museum ticket does not include St. Peter’s Basilica. The entry ticket listing says a visit to the basilica is free of charge but access is not guaranteed, because crowd control can change it.

If you want the basilica on the same trip, choose a product that lists it, such as the Touristation upgrade, or plan a separate visit. My guide to St. Peter’s Basilica covers the church. A map check shows the chapel and the basilica sit close together, but they are separate visits with separate entrances.

Your Sistine Chapel Tickets Checklist

Decide on official or seller, check the date, and book a slot before you travel. These steps cover the usual problems.

  1. Pick the product. Official ticket, skip-the-line entry or a guided group.
  2. Check the calendar. Avoid closed Sundays and listed holidays, or choose the free last Sunday with shorter hours.
  3. Compare the total. Add the 5-euro (about $6) official skip-the-line fee or the seller’s price, and check what is excluded.
  4. Save the meeting point. Write down the address and the arrival time.
  5. Arrive on time. Slots are fixed, and late arrival can cost you skip-the-line access.

For the cheapest choices, my page on cheapest Sistine Chapel tickets lines up the low-cost options. The tickets topic hub collects every ticket guide on this site, and with a booked slot, Sistine Chapel tickets are one of the easier parts of a Vatican day to get right.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to visit the Vatican museums?

The official full entry ticket costs 20 euros (about $22) without online booking, and the reduced ticket costs 10 euros (about $11). A reduced ticket with a Skip the Line booking on the official website costs 10 euros plus 5 euros (about $17 in total, at the ECB rate of 2026-11-06). Entry is free on the last Sunday of the month and for children below 7.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

The museums are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, and on dates including January 1 and 6, February 11, March 19, April 6, May 1, June 29, August 14 and 15, November 1 and December 8, 25 and 26. Check the official calendar before you book.

Which tour company is considered the best for Vatican City tours?

I cannot name one best company from the data I reviewed. The listings carry ratings from 4.09 to 4.48, and they differ in price, group size and whether the basilica is included, so compare the inclusions rather than relying on a single name.

Can you walk from Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica?

The chapel and the basilica are close on the map, but they are separate visits with separate entrances, and I have no sourced walking route between them. The basilica is entered through St. Peter's Square after a security check, so plan it as its own step.

What does Sistine mean in Italian?

The chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, according to the Vatican Museums' site. Its Italian name is Cappella Sistina, and its Latin name is Sacellum Sixtinum.
