Roma Vatican

By Updated 11 min read

Roma Vatican refers to Vatican City, a sovereign city-state that sits as an enclave inside the city of Rome, Italy. You can walk in from Rome's streets, but the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica each have their own entrance and rules.

Roma Vatican is how many visitors search for the Vatican, and the short version is this: the Vatican is a country inside a city. Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state, and it sits as an enclave within Rome. That one fact explains most of the planning questions I hear, from “which metro stop?” to “do I need a passport?”.

I’ll walk through how the Roma Vatican setup works, what sits inside the walls, how to get there and which ticket to pick. Where a number comes from a source, I link it. Where I have no source, I leave the number out.

Roma Vatican: How the Two Fit Together

The Roma Vatican relationship is simple on a map and layered in law. Rome is the Italian capital. Vatican City is a separate state with its own government, its own coins and its own stamps, wrapped entirely inside Rome’s city limits.

The state is tiny. Wikipedia gives an area of 0.49 square kilometres and a population of about 882, which makes it the smallest country by area and the least populous. You could cross it on foot in a short walk, and that is exactly why a Roma Vatican day trip is so easy to build into a Rome stay.

The Vatican also uses the euro, issues its own euro coins and is a de facto member of the Schengen Area, according to the same Wikipedia entry. In practice you walk from Rome into the Vatican without a passport check at the square, though security screening applies at the attractions.

Is the Vatican Part of Rome or a Separate Country?

Vatican City is a separate country, but it is physically part of the city of Rome. Wikipedia describes it as “ruled by the pope”, with the Holy See as the central authority of the Catholic Church worldwide.

The modern state dates to the Lateran Treaty, signed on 11 February 1929. Wikidata records the inception date as 1929-02-11. Before that, the pope had been, in Wikipedia’s words, a “prisoner in the Vatican” after Italy captured Rome in 1870. The 1929 treaty settled that standoff.

As one line from the encyclopedia puts it:

“Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.”
Wikipedia · Wikipedia: Vatican City

For a visitor, the legal detail matters in one way. The Vatican runs its own security and its own ticketing, so the rules you meet at the Museums are not Rome’s rules. Italian city passes may or may not cover them, which I come back to below.

Roma Vatican Visit: What You Can See Inside

A Roma Vatican visit usually means three things: the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square. Wikipedia lists the key sites as St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums, and the whole state is a World Heritage Site.

The Vatican Museums’ official site shows how big the collection is. It lists the Gregorian Egyptian Museum, the Gregorian Etruscan Museum, the Pio Clementino Museum, the Pinacoteca, the Borgia Apartment and Raphael’s Rooms, along with the Sistine Chapel itself.

Here is how I’d split them for planning:

  • Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: the ticketed part, and the one that needs a time slot.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica: one entry listed in the tour data is described as free of charge, but access is not guaranteed because of crowd control.
  • The dome: sold separately. One tour listing offers pre-reserved dome access with an elevator to the Basilica terrace only on select options.

If the Basilica is your priority, read my guide to St. Peter’s Basilica before you pick a ticket, because the Museums and the Basilica are separate visits with separate lines.

How Close Is the Vatican to Rome?

The Vatican is inside Rome, so it is as close as a neighborhood. Vatican City lies at roughly 41.904 N, 12.453 E, and Wikidata lists those coordinates. The Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, and the surrounding streets are part of Rome’s Prati area.

The nearby places in my data are all ordinary Roman addresses. A pizza takeaway sits on Via dei Gracchi, a restaurant on Via Sebastiano Veniero and a guesthouse on Via Crescenzio. None of them is inside Vatican City. They are a short walk from the walls.

Here are the places I would pin on your map:

How Do You Reach the Vatican by Metro?

Take Metro Line A to Ottaviano, then walk. One tour partner says the Ottaviano stop is only a 10-minute walk to its office, and it also warns that St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point for that tour.

That warning points at the most common Roma Vatican mistake: people head to the square when their ticket is for the Museums. The two are on different sides of the walls. The Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, and the GetYourGuide ticket page tells you to go directly to the Vatican Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano and show your voucher to security.

I don’t have a sourced route from Roma Termini, so I won’t invent travel times. Check a live transit planner on the day, and leave extra time before your entry slot. The ticket page says not to arrive outside your assigned time slot.

Can You Use a Roma Pass for the Vatican?

Some city passes include the Vatican, but you have to read exactly what each one covers. The Omnia Vatican and Rome Pass combines two products, the OMNIA Card and the Roma Pass. Its listing says it includes skip the line at the Vatican Museums, plus the Colosseum, unlimited public transport and an open-top hop-on hop-off bus ticket.

It costs $166.02 for three days, so it only pays off if you use many of the included sights. Reviewers say priority entry and transport are the strengths, and some find the office pickup unclear. The voucher is exchanged at an O.R.P. desk on Piazza Pio XII, near St. Peter’s, open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM and closed on Sundays and holidays.

A reviewer on that pass wrote:

“Desiree was fantastic, brilliant tour leader. Very engaging and knowledgeable. Would happily go on another tour with Desiree”
Jennifer, United Kingdom, 2026-09 · GetYourGuide review about Omnia Vatican and Rome Pass: Top Attractions and Travelcard

For the full breakdown of what a Roma Pass does and does not unlock, see my answer to do Vatican tickets work with a Roma Pass? and the separate guide to Vatican Museum tickets with the Roma Pass. I keep those two pages apart because the rules for the Museums are narrower than for city sights.

Which Vatican Ticket or Tour Fits Your Roma Vatican Trip?

Pick a self-guided entry ticket if you want freedom, and a guided tour if you want context and a smoother route through the crowds. I’d book a timed ticket and not rely on turning up, because the Museums are one of the busiest in the world, and the listing for the basic ticket says as much when it describes exploring one of the world’s busiest museums at your preferred time.

Here is how the six options in my data compare:

Option Price (USD) Duration Guide Rating
Museums & Sistine Chapel entrance ticket $36.21 1 day No guide, audio guide if selected 4.48
Skip-the-line entry with host (Inside Out Italy) $53.48 2.5 to 3 hours Host at check-in, no guide 4.42
Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica tour (Enjoy Rome) $60.17 2 to 3 hours Guided 4.27
Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica access (Real Barcelona Tours) $67.97 2.5 to 3 hours Licensed guide 4.32
Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica tour (Crown Tours) $71.31 2 to 4 hours Licensed guide 4.65
Omnia Vatican and Rome Pass $166.02 3 days No guide 3.67

My advice: if you have only one morning and want help finding the highlights, I’d book a guided tour. If you already know what you want to see, the plain entrance ticket is the better value. To compare every option side by side, Vatican tickets online is where I keep the full overview.

Notice what each listing leaves out. The basic ticket excludes a guided tour and the Basilica dome. The Enjoy Rome listing draws a common complaint about unclear St. Peter’s Basilica details, so read the option you select closely. Prices and availability change, so confirm the final figures at checkout and on the official site.

For a wider look at how the ticket types differ, my page on tickets for a Rome visit to the Vatican goes through each one.

What Are the Vatican Museums’ Opening Hours?

The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm and closed on Sunday, according to the hours listed on the Maps entry. That listing is a summary, not the final word.

The Museums have temporary closures, and the official site says so directly. Its homepage links to opening hours and temporary closures, and shows a live open or closed notice. Check it the day before you go.

Last-entry times also matter. I don’t have a sourced figure for the last admission, so ask the official page or your ticket confirmation before you plan a late-afternoon slot.

One more note on a Sunday Roma Vatican plan: the Museums are listed as closed, so use that day for the city and save the Museums for another day.

Where to Eat and Stay Near the Vatican

Eat and sleep in the Prati streets around the walls, not on the square. The restaurants and guesthouses there serve Romans as well as visitors, and they are a short walk from the Museums.

Three places from my data stand out:

  • Pinsa ’mpò on Via dei Gracchi, a pinsa and pizza takeaway rated 4.7 from 4,355 reviews. It is closed on Sunday.
  • Ristorante Pasta Roma & pizza on Via Sebastiano Veniero, a Roman restaurant rated 4.7, open 10 am to 10 pm and closed on Sunday.
  • Vaticano Roma Guesthouse on Via Crescenzio, a bed and breakfast rated 4.7 from 974 reviews.

A traveler described the pizza at the first spot like this:

“This place was the real deal. We each ordered a small pizza for lunch - hers with prosciutto and mushrooms and mine with salami. Each was prepared perfectly, with a not too crispy crust. Would recommend!”
Christopher · Google Maps review about Pinsa 'mpò - pinseria romana a roma prati vaticano

Notice that two of the three are closed on Sunday. If your trip lands on a Sunday, check hours before you walk over.

Roma Vatican by the Numbers

These figures come from Wikidata’s Vatican City record, and each one changes how I’d plan a visit:

  • Area: 0.44 km². Wikipedia’s figure above differs slightly, but both say the state is tiny, so you can cover it on foot.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Most people around you are visitors and Rome residents, not Vatican citizens.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11, the date of the Lateran Treaty.
  • Currency: euro. Bring a card or euros for the cafés nearby.
  • Time zone: Central European Time, UTC+01:00. Your slot is in local Rome time.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, so expect strict rules and screening.

Who Guards the Vatican?

The Pontifical Swiss Guard guards the Vatican, and you will see its members at the entrances. The official Vatican profile says the Guard was founded by Pope Julius II in 1506 and is made up of Swiss citizens.

Its duties include guarding the accesses to the Vatican City State, accompanying the pope on apostolic journeys and protecting the College of Cardinals when the papal seat is vacant. That is why a Roma Vatican photo with a guard in uniform is a common stop for visitors.

Treat the guards as part of the security system, not as a photo prop. Stand where staff allow, and follow instructions at the gates.

Roma Vatican Plan: A Practical Wrap-Up

My Roma Vatican plan comes down to five choices. First, decide whether you want the Museums, the Basilica or both, because they are separate visits. Second, book a timed Museums entry before you travel. Third, use Metro Line A to Ottaviano and walk. Fourth, check the official hours page the day before. Fifth, eat in the Prati streets and not on the square.

If you want one clear next step, pick a ticket from the tours below and read what it includes and excludes. For a broader look at the state itself, see my main guide to everything about the Vatican, and for related background browse the About Vatican City topics. Spanish-speaking readers can use the Spanish-language version of this guide.

Figures here are the latest I could source as of November 2026. When you book, check the official Vatican Museums site for current prices and rules, and then lock in your slot. If you want to see the options in one place, you can book Vatican tickets from the overview page.

How much do Vatican tickets cost?

Among the tours in my current comparison, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket on GetYourGuide starts at $36.21. Guided options with a licensed guide run from $60.17 to $71.31. Official prices change, so confirm them on the Vatican Museums website before you book.

Can you provide a map of the Vatican City?

Vatican City sits at about 41.904, 12.453 on a map, on the west bank of the Tiber inside Rome. The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, and the map block on this page pins the Museums and a few nearby places to eat and stay. Open the pins to get walking directions.

Is the Vatican a separate country from Italy?

Yes. Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state, established by the Lateran Treaty of 1929. It is also the smallest country by area and the least populous, and it is surrounded entirely by Rome.

Who guards the Vatican?

The Pontifical Swiss Guard, founded by Pope Julius II in 1506, guards the access points to Vatican City State and watches over the safety of the pope. It is a military body made up of Swiss citizens.
