Basilica Rome Italy

By Updated 11 min read

Basilica Rome Italy searches almost always point to St. Peter's Basilica, the huge Renaissance church in Vatican City, and entering it is free. Rome also has three other major papal basilicas, and each one is a separate visit.

Basilica Rome Italy searches almost always mean one building: St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world by interior measure. It stands in Vatican City, a microstate enclosed by the city of Rome. I’ll show you which basilica to pick, what it costs, when it is open and how to avoid the common mistakes.

Rome has more than one great basilica, so the first job is to choose the right one. After that, the planning is simple. Entry is free, the dress code is strict, and the extras are where tickets matter.

What Is the Basilica in Rome, Italy That Everyone Visits?

The basilica in Rome, Italy that most travelers want is St. Peter’s. Its full name is the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, and it sits at the end of St. Peter’s Square.

Construction began on 18 April 1506 and finished on 18 November 1626, according to Wikipedia. Donato Bramante, Michelangelo and Carlo Maderno designed it, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini shaped the piazza and fittings. Wikidata lists its height as 136.6 m, its length as 220 m and its width as 150 m.

It replaced the old basilica that Emperor Constantine had built in the fourth century. Catholic tradition holds that Saint Peter is buried directly below the high altar, which is why popes, cardinals and bishops have been buried here since the early Christian period.

Wikidata also records about 11 million visitors a year. That number explains why the lines, the security check and the timing matter so much.

If you want the full visitor guide, my page on St. Peter’s Basilica covers the building room by room. You can also browse everything on the St. Peter’s Basilica topic hub.

Is the Basilica in Vatican City or in Rome?

It is in Vatican City, and Vatican City is enclosed by Rome. So both answers are true, which is why people search for the Vatican, Rome and the basilica as one thing.

Wikipedia describes St. Peter’s as a church “located in Vatican City, an independent microstate enclaved within the city of Rome, Italy”. The basilica stands west of the River Tiber, near the Janiculum Hill and Hadrian’s Mausoleum.

This matters when you search for names. “Peter’s basilica” and “Saint Peter’s” both mean the same church, and I explain the naming in my pages on Peter’s Basilica and St. Basilica Vatican. If a hotel or map app says “St. Basilica Rome,” it means St. Peter’s too, and you can read more about what that name usually refers to.

One more point: the basilica is not the same as the Vatican Museums. They are separate entrances on different sides of the Vatican walls, and the Sistine Chapel is in the museums, not in the basilica.

Which Basilicas Are in Rome? The Four Major Papal Basilicas

Rome has four major papal basilicas, and all four are in Rome, per Wikipedia. St. Peter’s is ranked second among them, after the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran.

Here is how they compare. The hours come from Google Maps listings and can change, so check each church’s website before you go.

Basilica Where Daily hours (Maps) What to know
St. Peter’s Basilica Vatican City 7 am to 7:10 pm Largest church in the world by interior measure
Saint Mary Major Rome 7 am to 6:30 pm One of the four major papal basilicas
Saint John Lateran Rome 7 am to 6:30 pm Holds the title of mother church of the Catholic Church
Saint Paul Outside the Walls Rome Check the official site Present building completed in 1840

Saint John Lateran, not St. Peter’s, is the mother church of the Catholic Church and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. People often think St. Peter’s holds those titles, but Wikipedia says it holds neither. A “papal basilica” like this is a church with a special link to the pope, and I cover the term in my page on the papal basilica.

Saint Paul Outside the Walls is a good choice if you want a quieter visit. Wikipedia says it lies in Italian territory, but the Holy See owns it and it is part of the Vatican’s extraterritoriality. It was founded over the burial place of Paul of Tarsus and consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324.

All four are also on the list of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome. If you have time for only one basilica Rome Italy offers, choose St. Peter’s.

Is Entry to the Basilica Free?

Yes, walking into St. Peter’s Basilica is free. Access is not guaranteed, though, because crowd control can change the flow on any day.

The booking exclusions on one GetYourGuide Vatican ticket say the same thing: the basilica is free of charge, but access may vary due to crowd control. Plan for a security check at St. Peter’s Square before you can go in.

A Google Maps reviewer put the free visit well:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

You pay when you want more than the main church. The official site sells the Dome, the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis and guided tours of the basilica. If you want a ticket comparison, I put every option in one place: see every ticket type side by side.

For many travelers, the free basilica Rome Italy visit is the best value in the whole city, as long as you accept the security check and the wait. My advice: if the line looks long, do not give up. The queue moves in waves, and the free visit is worth the wait. If you are short on time, book a timed experience that includes the basilica so you are not depending on the line.

What if I only want the museums?

The Vatican Museums are a separate ticket. The GetYourGuide entrance ticket lists the basilica as an exclusion, so do not assume one ticket opens both buildings.

What Are the Opening Hours for the Basilica in Rome, Italy?

Google Maps lists St. Peter’s Basilica as open 7 am to 7:10 pm every day, so the basilica Rome Italy visitors queue for most is open from early morning to early evening. That is the Maps listing, not an official timetable, so confirm on the official St. Peter’s website before you travel.

Hours can change for papal ceremonies and special events. The pope presides at liturgies in the basilica and in the square, and Wikipedia says these draw audiences from 15,000 to over 80,000 people. On those days, expect closures or rerouting.

The other basilicas close earlier. Saint Mary Major and Saint John Lateran both show 7 am to 6:30 pm in Maps. My page on Vatican basilica hours goes deeper on timing, and it is the right next read if you are building a schedule.

I’d go early. One Maps reviewer arrived at 6:45 am and still found a line, but got in quickly. The same reviewer said a free visit can cover most of the church in about 40 minutes. That is one traveler’s pace, not an official figure.

What Should You Wear to the Basilica?

Cover your shoulders and knees. The official Dome FAQ says that clothing appropriate for a place of worship is required and that shoulders and knees must always be covered.

That rule is not only for the Dome. Guards at the door can refuse entry, and refusals cost people their whole slot. Carry a light scarf or a long-sleeved layer in your bag and you will be fine. I’d dress this way for any basilica Rome Italy offers, since churches are places of worship first.

Bags matter too. For the Dome, only small personal bags are permitted, and large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed. The official FAQ says there is no cloakroom or luggage storage service, so leave big bags at your hotel.

Basilica Rome Italy Visit Options Explained

You can visit the church alone, add the Dome, or join a guided tour. Each choice has different rules, and the official site spells them out.

The Dome. A Dome ticket bought online includes basilica entry and a Digital Audio Guide, per the official Dome page. The basilica slot is one hour before or one hour after your Dome time. The visit takes about 1 hour on average. The lift only goes to the terrace level. After that, the Dome FAQ says you climb 320 steps to reach the outer ring.

The Necropolis. The official site describes the Vatican Necropolis under the central nave, with ancient Roman and early Christian tombs and a path toward Saint Peter’s tomb.

The Treasury Museum. The official site presents it as a historical and spiritual journey through sacred art and liturgical furnishings.

Guided tours. The official site also sells guided tours of the basilica. Some marketplace tours bundle the basilica with the museums. Read the fine print, because several listings exclude a guided tour of the basilica itself.

If you book online, you get a voucher by email, then a second email with QR codes. The official FAQ says to write to booking@basilicasanpietro.va with your reference number if the QR email does not arrive within 30 minutes. Check your spam folder first.

Should You Book a Tour That Includes the Basilica?

If you also want the museums and the Sistine Chapel, a combined tour saves planning work. I’d book one when your days in Rome are limited and you want a guide to link the museums to the church.

These are the tours I’d compare first. The first is a self-guided museums ticket, and the others add a guide:

Check three things before you pay. First, whether the basilica is included or only an option you must select. Second, whether the basilica part is guided. Third, where the meeting point is. Reviews of several of these tours say unclear basilica details were the main frustration.

For example, tour 411732 and tour 127022 both list a guided tour of the basilica as an exclusion. Whatever basilica Rome Italy tour you choose, read the inclusions line by line, because the wording differs from one provider to the next and a small phrase can change what you actually get on the day.

One traveler on the Enjoy Rome tour said:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”

How Do You Get to the Basilica and What Is Nearby?

A good basilica Rome Italy day starts with the route, so walk to St. Peter’s Square, which is the main approach to the basilica. The Google Maps address is Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Vatican City. The Ottaviano stop on Metro Line A is about a 10-minute walk to the meeting points that two tour listings mention.

Do not confuse the square with a tour meeting point. Two listings say plainly that St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point. Check your voucher for the address.

Your Basilica Rome Italy Plan in Five Steps

Here is how I’d plan the basilica Rome Italy visit if you only have one day.

  1. Pick St. Peter’s, unless you specifically want another papal basilica.
  2. Confirm hours and any ceremony closures on the official site.
  3. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, and leave large bags behind.
  4. Go early if you are doing the free visit, and add the Dome if you want the view.
  5. Book a timed ticket or tour if you also want the museums, and read the inclusions first.

Prices and slots change, so check the current details before you pay. If you are still choosing, start with the ticket options here and compare the tours above. Then walk into one of the greatest churches in the world with a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vatican the same as St. Peter's Basilica?

No. Vatican City is the independent microstate, and St. Peter's Basilica is the church inside it. The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are also inside Vatican City, but they are a different visit with a different ticket.

Do I need a ticket to enter the basilica?

Entry to the basilica itself is free, but access is not guaranteed because crowd control can change it. A ticket is needed for extras like the Dome, and a Dome ticket bought online includes basilica entry.

How long does the Dome visit take?

The official site says the Dome visit lasts about 1 hour on average. The time depends on your climbing pace and how long you stay at the top.

Can I wear shorts or a sleeveless top?

No. The official Dome page says clothing suitable for a place of worship is required, and shoulders and knees must always be covered.

What do I need to show at the entrance if I book online?

Show the QR code at the basilica and Dome entrance, either on your phone or printed. The official site says the access QR codes are mandatory.

Is there a basilica in Rome that is not in Vatican City?

Yes. Saint Mary Major, Saint John Lateran and Saint Paul Outside the Walls are all in Rome. Saint Paul's lies in Italian territory, but the Holy See owns it.
