Sistine Chapel Tour

By Updated 11 min read

A Sistine Chapel tour is a visit through the Vatican Museums that ends in Michelangelo's chapel, led by a guide or booked as a skip-the-line entry ticket. Guided versions run about $55 to $110 for two to three and a half hours, while the official entry ticket costs 20 euros (about $22) without online booking.

A Sistine Chapel tour is how most visitors reach Michelangelo’s frescoes, because the chapel sits at the end of the Vatican Museums route and has no entrance of its own. You can join a guided group, book a skip-the-line entry ticket and walk the route yourself, or add St. Peter’s Basilica to the same morning. On this page I compare the options, explain the official ticket and answer the practical questions that come up before you go.

I write for an independent guide, not a tour operator or ticket office. Tour details come from partner listings on GetYourGuide, and official facts come from the Vatican Museums pages I link. Figures are the latest published as of November 2026, so confirm prices and times before you pay. If you want a general overview first, start at Vatican Ticket Guide.

What Is Included in Sistine Chapel Tours?

Sistine Chapel tours normally include skip-the-line entry to the Vatican Museums and the chapel, a guide and audio headsets. The Brastours listing, for example, includes skip-the-line tickets for the museums, the chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, an illustrated factsheet about the chapel, official Vatican headsets and free Wi-Fi at the meeting point.

Other listings add or drop pieces. The Enjoy Rome listing offers skip-the-line access to the museums and the chapel and, if you choose that option, to the basilica. The Made in Rome Tours listing includes a guide and guaranteed skip-the-line access to all three. Tips are excluded from several of them.

What no tour changes is the building. The chapel is part of the museum complex, so every route goes through the galleries first. That is why the length of a tour matters as much as its price.

What Will You See Inside the Chapel?

You will see Michelangelo’s ceiling and The Last Judgment, plus earlier wall frescoes by Renaissance painters. According to Wikipedia, the chapel was built between 1473 and 1481 under Pope Sixtus IV, from whom it takes its name, and it is the site of the papal conclave, where a new pope is chosen.

The Sistine Chapel ceiling was painted in fresco by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512 and was commissioned by Pope Julius II. Before Michelangelo, painters including Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Perugino decorated the walls with a series of frescoes depicting the Life of Moses.

A good guide uses this background to point out what to look at, and the Gray Line listing highlights the Creation of Adam and the Raphael Rooms with the School of Athens. If you go without a guide, I’d take the Brastours factsheet or an audio guide so you still get some of the same context.

How Much Does a Sistine Chapel Tour Cost?

Guided tours cost from about $55 to about $110 per person, while the self-guided entry ticket is listed lower. The table below compares the main listings. Prices are in US dollars as listed on GetYourGuide when the data was collected, and they can change by date and option.

Tour Format Duration Listed price
Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket Self-guided entry Self-paced $36.21
Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s Basilica Tour (Brastours) Small-group guided 3 hours $55.15
Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s Basilica Tour (Enjoy Rome) Guided walking tour 2 - 3 hours $60.17
Rome: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica Tour (Crown Tours) Guided, optional basilica 2 - 4 hours $71.31
Vatican, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s Skip-the-Line Tour (Made in Rome Tours) Guided 3 hours $76.88
Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-the-Ticket-Line Tour (Gray Line) Group of up to 20 3 - 3.5 hours $109.87

My advice: the cheapest option is not always the best fit. A listing that bundles the basilica saves a second queue, while a higher price can buy a smaller group or a longer route. Read the inclusions on each listing before you book.

How Much Is the Sistine Chapel to Enter?

The Sistine Chapel is covered by the Vatican Museums entry ticket, which costs 20 euros for a full ticket and 10 euros for a reduced one without online booking. At the ECB reference rate of 6 November 2026, that is about $22 and $11. The official prices page says the ticket entitles you to the museums and the chapel only on the day it is issued, and that tickets cannot be refunded.

Booking a time slot adds a fee. The same page lists 5 euros (about $6) on top of the reduced ticket for a Skip the Line booking, and the museums say the only official site for online tickets is tickets.museivaticani.va. They warn that look-alike sites may charge significantly higher prices.

A guided tour costs more because it includes the guide, headsets and a planned route. If you only want the ticket, my guide to Sistine Chapel tickets goes through the options in detail, and Vatican and Sistine Chapel tour tickets compares tickets that bundle both.

How Much Time Do You Need for a Sistine Chapel Tour?

Plan for three hours for a guided museums and chapel route, and more if you add the basilica. The listings range from 2 hours to 4 hours, with the Gray Line tour at 3 to 3.5 hours and the Crown Tours listing at 2 to 4 hours depending on the option.

One reviewer of the chapel wrote that you definitely need more than one day to take it all in, which tells you how large the collection is. A tour trims that into a route, but you give up the chance to linger.

Leave time before the start for the meeting point. The Made in Rome Tours listing asks you to arrive 20 minutes early at Via Plauto 17/A in Borgo Pio, and the Gray Line listing says latecomers cannot be accommodated.

What Days Should You Avoid for a Sistine Chapel Visit?

Avoid Sundays and the holiday closure days, because the museums are shut. The official opening page lists Monday to Saturday hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with final entry at 6:00 pm, and says visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing.

The closure list names 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. The page also lists temporary closures of single sectors, including a Sistine Chapel closure on 4 December, so check the museums’ calendar for your exact date.

The last Sunday of the month is the exception. Entry is free from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm with final entry at 12:30 pm, except on certain feast days. That day is popular, so expect crowds if you plan around it.

Crowds are a real factor on other days too. One reviewer of the chapel wrote that the crowds are brutal and suggested going after 3 pm, when most cruise ship tours are over. That is one visitor’s view, but it fits the logic of picking a late slot if your tour offers one.

“If you can, you need to visit this place. The relics and treasures are just incredible. You definitely need more than one day to take it all in. The crowds are brutal so try and go after 3pm when most of the cruise ship tours are over.”

Can You Wear Jeans to the Vatican?

Full-length jeans are not mentioned in the official rules, and the rules focus on what is not allowed. The Vatican Museums say entry to the museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors. Sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted.

The same visitor advice page extends the idea of decorum to visible personal objects and distinctive personal signs, such as tattoos, that may offend Catholic morality, the Catholic religion and common decency. Cover shoulders and knees and carry a light layer for the chapel.

Large bags go to the cloakroom, which the museums say is free of charge. Knives, scissors and metal tools must also be stored there.

Can You Walk From the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica?

Some tours include the basilica in the same visit, but check your listing to see how it handles the transfer. The Enjoy Rome, Crown Tours, Made in Rome Tours and Brastours listings all offer or include St. Peter’s Basilica, which saves a separate trip if you book it as a bundle.

The museums remind visitors who continue to the basilica not to leave their baggage in the museum cloakroom. Maps data lists the basilica as open from 7 am to 7:10 pm every day.

Treat basilica access as dependent on crowd control. The self-guided entry listing notes that basilica entry is free but not guaranteed and may vary with crowd control. If the basilica matters to you, pick a tour that names it in the inclusions.

How Do Travelers Rate These Tours?

Ratings sit between 4.27 and 4.65 out of 5. The Enjoy Rome tour has by far the most reviews, about 87,000 at 4.27, while the Crown Tours listing holds 4.65 from more than 19,000 and the Brastours listing holds 4.59 from more than 11,000. The self-guided entry ticket holds 4.48 from about 160,000 reviews.

Travelers tend to praise knowledgeable guides and the time saved at the entrance. The most common suggestion is clearer information about the correct queue and arrival time, and about closures that affect the chapel or the basilica. One reviewer who could not take a guided tour because their child used a wheelchair did the visit alone with an audio guide and still saw most of the sights.

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”

Where Do Sistine Chapel Tours Meet?

Meeting points differ by operator and are printed on your voucher. The Crown Tours office is on Via Mocenigo, about two minutes from the museums. The Made in Rome Tours group checks in at Via Plauto 17/A in Borgo Pio near St. Peter’s Square, and the Gray Line group meets in Piazza del Risorgimento in front of Bar L’Ottagono.

The self-guided ticket works differently. You go straight to the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, show the ticket to security and scan it at the box office after the security check. Do not arrive outside your assigned time slot.

Sistine Chapel Tour by the Numbers

These figures come from Wikidata and help you picture what your tour is heading toward. Each one comes with a note on what it means for your visit.

  • Length: the chapel is 40.9 m long, so the room you enter at the end of the route is long and narrow rather than a grand hall.
  • Width: it is 13.4 m wide, which explains why the room feels dense even when numbers are controlled.
  • Height: the walls rise 21 m, so you spend most of your time looking up.
  • Built: the chapel dates from 1473, under Pope Sixtus IV, with Baccio Pontelli as architect.
  • Ceiling start: Michelangelo’s ceiling dates from 1508, and it is a fresco, so the paint is in the plaster itself.
  • Ceiling size: the painted surface measures 4,093 cm by 1,341 cm, roughly 41 by 13 meters.
  • Vatican City area: the whole state covers only 0.44 km², which is why the chapel, museums and basilica sit close together.

Which Sistine Chapel Tour Should You Book?

Book a small-group guided tour if you want explanation, a self-guided entry ticket if you want freedom, and a combined tour if you also want the basilica. Group size, meeting point and extras are the main differences, so compare those along with the price.

A few reminders help the choice:

  • Guided options start near $55 and rise to about $110.
  • A group capped at 20 people, as in the Gray Line listing, is easier to hear than a large one.
  • The self-guided entry listing includes an optional audio guide and a dedicated entrance, but not a guide.
  • No private tour price appears in the listings I reviewed, so ask an operator for a quote if you want one.

If you are comparing formats, my page on the Sistine Chapel guided tour looks at the guide side, and the page on the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum tour explains the museum route in more depth. The wider Vatican City tour guide shows how the chapel fits into a full day, and my tours hub groups every tour question.

Final Tips for Your Sistine Chapel Tour

I’d book early for your preferred date, dress modestly, arrive at the meeting point before the start time and keep your voucher on your phone. The Sistine Chapel tour you choose should match your pace, your budget and whether you want the basilica on the same morning.

Remember that official entry tickets cannot be refunded and are valid only on the day they are issued, while partner tours set their own cancellation terms on the listing. The tours below show current options and prices.

For place-based planning, see how the chapel connects to the rest of the city in my guides to the Sistine Chapel in Rome and the Vatican and Sistine Chapel.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need to see the Sistine Chapel?

The guided tours I reviewed run from 2 to 3.5 hours for the museums and chapel, and some add the basilica. The chapel is part of the Vatican Museums visit, so most visitors plan the whole museum route rather than the chapel alone.

What days should you avoid at the Vatican?

The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month when entry is free and the hours are shorter. The official calendar also lists closures on dates such as 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June and 14 and 15 August.

How much is the Sistine Chapel to enter?

There is no separate chapel ticket. The Vatican Museums entry ticket, 20 euros (about $22) for a full ticket without online booking, covers the museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued.

Can you wear jeans to the Vatican?

The official visitor advice does not mention jeans by name. It says sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted, so full-length trousers that cover the knee meet that wording.

How much does a private Vatican tour cost?

The listings I reviewed include no private tour price. The group tours are listed from about $55 to $110 per person, so ask an operator directly for a private quote.
