Vatican Museum Online Reservation

By Updated 10 min read

Vatican Museum online reservation is made on the official portal, tickets.museivaticani.va, which the museums name as the only official site for buying tickets online. Skip the Line booking adds a fee on top of the entry price, and the ticket is valid only on the day it is issued and cannot be refunded.

Vatican Museum online reservation means buying your entry on the official ticket portal before you leave your hotel, so you do not stand in the walk-up line. I’d treat it as the first job on any Rome plan that includes the Sistine Chapel. The museums are huge, and the day you choose shapes everything else.

This guide covers the exact booking steps, what each ticket costs in euros and dollars, who gets in free, and what to do if the slot you want is gone. Prices and hours change, so I link the official pages next to every figure. Figures here are the latest published as of November 2026.

How Do You Make a Vatican Museum Online Reservation?

You make a Vatican Museum online reservation on the official ticket portal, choose your ticket type and pay there. The museums name this address as the only official site for buying tickets online. Everything else is a reseller or a copy.

Here is the order I’d follow:

  1. Open the portal and pick the day you want. Check first that the day is not a closure date (see the hours section below).
  2. Choose the ticket type that fits you: full, reduced, student or school. The official price page explains who qualifies for each.
  3. Add the Skip the Line booking, which is the online reservation fee. This is what saves you the queue.
  4. Pay and save the confirmation, on your phone and on paper if you can.
  5. Arrive at the entrance on Viale Vaticano and follow the signs for online ticket holders.

I know some visitors want a longer walkthrough of each screen. My separate online ticket reservation steps page goes through the process in more detail.

The ticket covers the museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. The Sistine Chapel is the last room on the visitor route, so plan your time to reach it before closing, as the Wikipedia entry on the museums describes the route.

Is the Official Site the Only Safe Place to Book Online?

The official portal is the only site the museums themselves name for online ticket sales. The museums also warn that copycat websites with similar domains may charge significantly higher prices. Before you enter card details, check that the address reads tickets.museivaticani.va.

This matters because the problem is easy to fall into. A search for tickets can lead you to pages that look official but are not. If a site charges well above the prices in the table below, stop and go back to the official address.

Resellers are a different thing from scam sites. Licensed tour companies sell skip-the-line entry and guided visits, and they are clear about what you get. I cover that route further down. If you want a plain explanation of the difference, my guide to which sites count as official lays it out.

Vatican Museums Online Booking Prices and Fees

Vatican Museums online booking starts at the entry price and adds a Skip the Line fee. The official page shows a full ticket at EUR 20.00 and a reduced ticket at EUR 10.00 without online booking. With Skip the Line booking, the reduced ticket is listed as EUR 10.00 plus EUR 5.00.

I convert euros to dollars with the ECB reference rate of 6 November 2026, which is 1.1165 dollars per euro. Your card rate will differ a little.

Ticket (official portal) Without online booking With Skip the Line booking
Full entry EUR 20.00 (about $22.33) Check the portal for the total
Reduced entry EUR 10.00 (about $11.17) EUR 10.00 + 5.00 (about $16.75)
Reduced, students EUR 10.00 (about $11.17) EUR 10.00 + 5.00 (about $16.75)
Reduced, schools EUR 5.00 (about $5.58) EUR 5.00 + 2.00 (about $7.82)

The official page lists the Skip the Line fee for the reduced tickets only. For the full ticket I won’t guess a total. Open the portal, pick your date and read the final price before you pay. Every figure above comes from the Vatican Museums price page.

One more rule to know: tickets cannot be refunded. If your plans are not fixed, book once you are sure of your dates. For a wider look at every ticket option, my page on Vatican Museum tickets compares them.

Can You Visit the Vatican Museums Without a Reservation?

Yes, you can buy at the door. The official price list shows a full ticket at EUR 20 and a reduced ticket at EUR 10 without online booking. What you give up is the Skip the Line service.

Here is how one traveler put it:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That visitor turned up near 5 p.m., waited 30 to 40 minutes for tickets and then had to hurry through the galleries. That is the cost of walking up late: less time inside. Final entry is at 6:00 p.m. and visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, so a late arrival gives you very little room.

My advice is simple. If you have a fixed day in Rome, make the reservation. If you are flexible and arrive early on a quieter weekday, walking up can work, but I would not rely on it. My page on do the Vatican Museums need reservations looks at that choice more closely.

Is There a Free Vatican Museum Online Reservation?

There is no free reservation for ordinary days, but entry itself is free on the last Sunday of each month. The museums open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. that day, with final entry at 12:30 p.m. The exceptions are Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December and 31 December.

A free Vatican Museum online reservation is therefore a question of timing rather than a special booking. On that Sunday the official page notes a possibility of guided tours upon reservation. Plan for crowds, because free days attract many visitors.

The price page also lists other free categories:

  • Children below the age of 7.
  • Directors of museum institutions, managing boards and bodies that protect archaeological, historic and artistic heritage.
  • Visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%, who need proper documentation or the European Disability Card.

Free tickets for disabled visitors and a companion cannot be booked online. They are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, and the visitor and companion get priority skip-the-line entry. Groups on a pilgrimage can request a reduced ticket, but free entry does not apply to them.

When Are the Vatican Museums Open and Closed?

From Monday to Saturday the Vatican Museums are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. They are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month. Check the official hours page before you book, because closures decide which dates you can pick.

The fixed closure dates on that page are:

  • 1 and 6 January
  • 11 February
  • 19 March
  • 6 April
  • 1 May
  • 29 June
  • 14 and 15 August
  • 1 November
  • 8, 25 and 26 December

The same page lists temporary closures. One example is 10 November, when all sectors close from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. The Sistine Chapel closes from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on 4 and 18 December, with last entry at 5:30 p.m. Because the Sistine Chapel is the final room on the route, an evening visit on those days needs extra care.

There is also a calendar for 2026 to 2027. The museums publish it as a PDF of openings and closures, and I’d check it each time before I pay.

What If You Cannot Get a Slot on the Official Portal?

If the official portal has nothing for your day, the next step is a licensed skip-the-line ticket or a guided tour from a tour company. These cost more than the official price because they bundle a host, an audio guide or a guide. They are a legitimate option, not a trick, as long as you read what is included.

If you are asking where to buy Vatican tickets from a trusted reseller, my homepage compares the main options. The tours below are all entry tickets with a time slot, so pick the style you prefer.

The first set is self-guided. The entrance ticket from GetYourGuide includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and an audio guide if you select that option. It excludes a guided tour and St. Peter’s Basilica. Here is what one buyer wrote:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”
Sukanta, Ireland, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

If you want someone to explain the rooms, a guided tour makes sense. These include a licensed guide, and some add optional entry to St. Peter’s Basilica, so read the options on each page.

I’d choose a guided option if it is your first visit and you want context for the Sistine Chapel. I’d choose the self-guided ticket if you already know what you want to see. For a full walkthrough of the booking route, see how to buy tickets for the Vatican Museum online.

Vatican Museum Online Reservation by the Numbers

These facts come from Wikidata and help you see why booking ahead matters. I add one line on what each means for your visit.

  • Visitors per year: 1,612,530 in 2021, a figure recorded during the pandemic years. The museums were visited by 6.8 million people in 2024, according to Wikipedia, so expect far more people than the 2021 count suggests.
  • Inception: 1506, the year the collection began with Pope Julius II. You are visiting more than five centuries of history.
  • Opened: 1771 is the date of official opening.
  • Area of Vatican City: 0.44 km². Everything is close together, so a short walk takes you from the museums to St. Peter’s.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. It is a tiny state with a huge visitor load.
  • Heritage designation: World Heritage Site, which explains the strict rules at the entrance.

Wikipedia also states that the museums hold roughly 70,000 works, of which 20,000 are on display. That is why I never suggest trying to see everything in one visit.

Where Do You Go After Your Vatican Museum Online Reservation?

Go straight to the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano and show your ticket at security. After the check you scan it at the box office called CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI. Do not arrive outside your assigned time slot if your ticket has one.

The nearest Metro stop is Ottaviano - San Pietro - Musei Vaticani on Line A. One tour page describes the walk from there to its meeting office as about 10 minutes, and the museums sit in the same neighborhood.

If you book through a tour company, the meeting point may not be the museum gate. One option has you check in at an office on Via Sebastiano Veniero, another at Via Germanico, and a third at Via Mocenigo. Read the voucher twice, because St. Peter’s Square is not a meeting point for any of them.

For meals, two well-rated spots nearby are Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci and Caffè Delle Commari on Via Santamaura. I’d eat before you enter, since the visit can run long.

Final Checklist for Your Vatican Museum Online Reservation

Use the online ticket office guide if you want one more check on the booking site. Then run through this list before you pay:

  • Confirm the date is not a closure day on the official hours page.
  • Book only at tickets.museivaticani.va, or through a reseller whose inclusions you have read.
  • Remember that tickets are valid on the day issued and cannot be refunded.
  • Plan to reach the Sistine Chapel well before the halls close, with final entry at 6:00 p.m. on regular days.
  • Keep your confirmation ready on your phone and arrive early.

My last piece of advice is to make the Vatican Museum online reservation as soon as your dates are fixed, then build the rest of your day around it. If you are still comparing ticket types, you can see every ticket type side by side and choose the one that fits. For more guides on this topic, browse all the Vatican ticket guides.
