St Peter's Basilica Tickets

By Updated 12 min read

St Peter's Basilica tickets are not needed for a standard visit, which a museum-ticket listing describes as free of charge, but they are needed for the dome and for guided or reserved-entry options. Listed products run from about $16 for a guided basilica visit to about $128 for a small-group Vatican tour, and the official site sells the dome with lift or stairs.

St Peter’s Basilica tickets cause more confusion than almost any other Vatican purchase, because the church itself and the extras are handled differently. Walking in for a standard visit is described as free of charge in a Vatican Museums entry listing, but the dome, guided visits and reserved-entry products are paid and booked by time slot. This guide shows which is which and what each one costs.

I’m an independent guide, not the ticket office. If you want the wider picture of every Vatican entry option, you can book Vatican tickets online after reading this page.

Do You Need St Peter’s Basilica Tickets?

You do not need St Peter’s Basilica tickets for a standard visit, but you do need a booking for the dome and for any guided or reserved-entry product. A Vatican Museums entry listing describes the basilica as free of charge and warns that access is not guaranteed, because crowd control can change it.

That warning is the real catch. Every visitor passes security checks in St. Peter’s Square before entering, and the line is where time is lost. A traveler’s review of the basilica gives a feel for it:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

That reviewer describes the free visit as taking about 40 minutes and suggests paying for the other locations. I cover the question in more depth on the page about whether you need tickets for St. Peter’s Basilica. The short version is that a ticket buys you a time slot, extra areas or a guide, not the right to look at the church.

What Does the Official Site Sell for St. Peter’s Basilica?

The basilica’s official website sells the dome, the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis and guided tours. It is the place to start for official St. Peter’s Basilica tickets, and it calls itself the official website of Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Here is what the official product pages say:

  • The dome with lift: includes access and a visit to the basilica with a Digital Audio Guide. The reservation includes personalised visiting hours, a lift ride to the terrace level and a visit to the inner and outer rings of the dome.
  • The dome with stairs: the same offer, with stairs to the terrace level instead of the lift.
  • The Treasury Museum: an itinerary through sacred artworks, liturgical furnishings and artistic treasures.
  • The Necropolis: a visit under the central nave to ancient Roman and early Christian tombs, along the path toward Saint Peter’s tomb.
  • Guided tours: a guided tour of the basilica, listed on the home page.

The basilica entry time on a dome booking is scheduled either one hour before or one hour after your dome visit, depending on visitor flow, so check the slot in your email. My page on official St. Peter’s Basilica tickets goes through how to spot the real site. The official pages I used list no prices, so confirm them when you book.

How Do You Book Tickets to St. Peter’s Basilica?

To book tickets to St. Peter’s Basilica, choose the product on the official site or a seller platform, pick a date and time, and keep the voucher or QR codes ready. The steps are simple, but the details differ by seller.

On the official dome booking, the dome FAQ explains two emails. Email No. 1 holds the voucher that confirms your services. Email No. 2 holds the QR codes for every participant, which are mandatory at the access checks, along with your assigned route, either Sobieski or Lambertini. If Email No. 2 does not arrive within 30 minutes, the FAQ says to check your spam folder and write to the booking address it gives, quoting your reference number.

On the day of your visit, you can retrieve the QR codes and the digital audio guide codes at the basilica’s QR page by entering your email and the details from your voucher. Seller products such as the ones below work differently, with a voucher you exchange for an entry ticket at a meeting point. For step-by-step help, read my guide on how to book tickets to St. Peter’s Basilica.

Which St. Peter’s Basilica Tickets Can You Buy From Sellers?

Sellers list six kinds of products: a basilica visit with an audio guide, a dome climb, a guided basilica tour, a museums ticket with basilica upgrade and two small-group tours. The table shows the listed price, length and main inclusion for each.

Product Price Length Main inclusion
Guided tour of the basilica (Gyash Tours) $15.88 2 hours Pre-reserved ticket, licensed guide, shared or private option
Basilica with optional dome and audioguide (Loving Rome) $19.05 1 to 2 hours Reserved access, downloadable audioguide, escorted entry

Small-group Vatican, Sistine and basilica tour (Through Eternity Tours) $128.14 3 hours Expert guide and fast-track basilica entrance

The listed amounts are in US dollars and change by date and option. The lowest-cost options focus on the basilica alone, and the higher-cost ones are full Vatican tours where the basilica is one stop.

What Does Each Basilica Ticket Include?

Each product bundles different things, so read the inclusions line by line. The gaps matter more than the headline.

Loving Rome basilica ticket. It lists reserved access, a downloadable audio guide and escorted entry, and it excludes skip-the-line entry, a live guide and headsets. The seller warns that all guests pass airport-style security and that peak-season waits can reach 2 to 3 hours. Staff meet you with a “Loving Rome” flag near the arches where the square meets Via di Porta Angelica, and you should arrive 15 minutes before your entrance time.

Get Your Roman Tours dome climb. It lists a dome climb entry ticket with a digital audio guide in 15 languages. It excludes a live guide, headphones and skip-the-line entry. The meeting point is Via Germanico 36, a two to three minute walk from Ottaviano metro stop.

Gyash Tours guided visit. It includes a licensed guide in the language you select and says the Vatican reserves up to 40 minutes for security checks that cannot be skipped. The dome is included only with a selected option, and the listing says it is not suitable for wheelchair users. You exchange your voucher at Vicolo del Farinone 23.

Through Eternity Tours. It lists fast-track entry to St. Peter’s Basilica, which is not guaranteed for bookings made less than 72 hours in advance. Guests can stay in the basilica on their own after the tour ends.

A guest on one of these products left this note about the lift option:

“Amazing experience! The views from the dome were amazing. I’d say the lift was worth the extra cost as the steps after the lift to the top of the dome were tiring. We got there for 8am and by the time we left around 10am it was extremely busy, so it was well worth getting there early.”
Amelia, United Kingdom, 2026-05 · GetYourGuide review about St. Peter’s Basilica with Optional Dome Ticket & Audioguide

That review describes the steps after the lift as tiring and recommends arriving early, which fits the official FAQ, where the lift stops at the terrace level and the outer ring needs 320 more steps.

How Much Does It Cost to Go Up St. Peter’s Basilica?

The official pages I used do not list a price for the dome, so the safest answer is to check the booking page. The listed seller price for a dome climb ticket with an audio guide is $22.73, and a basilica ticket with an optional dome is listed at $19.05.

The dome FAQ explains what you get for the ride. The visit lasts about one hour on average, but the real time depends on your pace. The lift goes only to the terrace level, and from the inner ring you climb 320 steps to reach the outer ring. The ticket includes basilica entry, to be done 90 minutes before your purchased dome entry time, plus the digital audio guide.

If you are deciding between the lift and the stairs, my page on St. Peter’s Basilica dome tickets compares them in more detail. The official product pages describe both as including the basilica visit and a visit to the inner and outer rings.

How Long Is the Wait to Get Into St. Peter’s Basilica?

The wait depends on the day and hour, and the only wait figure I can source is a seller’s warning of 2 to 3 hours in peak season. The best way to cut it is to arrive early and choose a time slot that matches the basilica’s opening hours.

The map listing for the basilica shows 7 am to 7:10 pm every day, and the listing for St. Peter’s Gallery near the colonnade shows 9 am to 6:30 pm. Hours change by season, so confirm them on the official site. The dome FAQ also says security checks in St. Peter’s Square come before the dome, and they are mandatory for all visitors.

A second traveler’s note supports early arrival. A reviewer of the dome product reached the basilica at 8 am and said the site was extremely busy by the time they left around 10 am. Neither review is a promise, but both point the same way. A reserved ticket does not remove security, so budget time for it either way.

What Should You Wear and Bring to the Basilica?

Wear clothing appropriate for a place of worship, with shoulders and knees always covered, and carry only a small bag. Both rules come from the dome FAQ.

Large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed, and the FAQ says there is no cloakroom or luggage storage. That makes a small day bag the right choice. The same FAQ does not mention jeans, so there is no official yes or no on them here. Covered shoulders and knees are the rule I can source, and the one I’d plan around.

What Is There to See Around the Basilica?

The basilica is an easy start to a wider day. It sits in St. Peter’s Square, and there are cafes and a gallery nearby, so you can pair a morning visit with lunch.

Wikipedia describes it as the largest church in the world by interior measure, with construction running from 18 April 1506 to 18 November 1626. Its page also says Catholic tradition holds that the basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter, with his tomb directly below the high altar. If you plan to visit the museums too, my page on the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica tickets explains how the two fit together, and my guide to St. Peter’s Basilica covers the church itself.

Is a Full Vatican Tour a Better Way to Get St Peter’s Basilica Tickets?

A full Vatican tour is a better fit if you also want the museums and the Sistine Chapel, because one booking then covers all three sights. It costs more than a basilica-only product, and the basilica part has conditions you should read.

The Through Eternity Tours listing, at $128.14 for 3 hours, includes a small group, an expert guide and the chance to remain in the basilica on your own after the tour ends. The What a Life Tours listing, at $121.45 for 3 to 3.5 hours, offers earliest available entrance to the museums and direct access from the Sistine Chapel to the basilica without waiting in line. Its voucher meets at an office on Via Santamaura 14B, a few meters from the museums entrance.

One guest on the Through Eternity tour wrote this:

“This was our second time doing this same tour and we enjoyed it just as much as the first! There’s so much to see and take in and we keep learning something new with every tour we take!”
Paul, United States, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Skip-the-Line Vatican, Sistine & St. Peter's Tour

Remember that fast-track basilica entry on that listing is not guaranteed for bookings made less than 72 hours ahead. If your dates are close, a basilica-only booking or the cheaper museums ticket with a basilica upgrade may be easier to confirm.

Your St. Peter’s Basilica Tickets Checklist

Decide whether a standard visit is enough, then book only what you need: the dome, a guide or a reserved-entry product. Here is a short plan.

  1. Choose your goal. A free standard visit, a dome climb or a guided tour.
  2. Book early for the dome. Pick lift or stairs on the official site, and check the basilica slot in your email.
  3. Keep the QR codes and voucher ready. Retrieve them from the confirmation emails if you lose them.
  4. Dress and pack for the rules. Cover shoulders and knees, and carry only a small bag.
  5. Plan for security. Arrive early and allow for the check in the square.

For all the ways to compare tickets across the Vatican, see my guide to Vatican museum tickets and the tickets topic hub. With the right booking and an early start, St Peter’s Basilica tickets are one of the simpler parts of a Vatican day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need tickets to get into St. Peter's basilica?

A standard visit does not need a ticket according to a Vatican museums entry listing, which calls the basilica free of charge but says access is not guaranteed because crowd control can change it. You do need a booking for the dome, and reserved-entry or guided products are sold separately.

How to book tickets for St. Peter's basilica?

Book the dome through the basilica's official site, where you can choose the dome with lift or the dome with stairs. Seller platforms list basilica tickets with an audio guide or a guide, and you exchange a voucher at a meeting point before entry.

How long is the wait to get into St. Peter's basilica?

Everyone passes an airport-style security check in St. Peter's Square, and one seller warns that waits can reach 2 to 3 hours in peak season. A traveler who arrived at 6:45 am reported a line but quick entry, so going early helps.

How much does it cost to go up St. Peter's basilica?

The official site sells the dome with lift and the dome with stairs, and I could not source a published price, so check the booking page. Seller listings show a dome climb ticket with an audio guide at $22.73 and a basilica ticket with an optional dome at $19.05.

Can I wear jeans to St. Peter's basilica?

The official dome FAQ does not mention jeans. It requires clothing appropriate for a place of worship, and shoulders and knees must always be covered, so choose what you wear with that rule in mind.

Keep planning your visit
